NME
The Northampton artist enlists Fontaines D.C., Shygirl and more on this exhilarating return to his punk-rap roots.

slowthai’s newest is the work of an artist clearly more excited than ever about what he himself can do now he’s booted his own doors wide open. ‘UGLY’ is a beautiful thing to behold.

The Guardian

Fusing rap, alt-rock and abrasive electronics, the Northampton rapper mints a sound all his own on his third album.

Sputnikmusic

UGLY is a headlong tumble into deep waters, careening sharply off the edges of decency and screaming out for meaning as it goes, arse over teakettle into the unknown.

Still Listening
slowthai is an example of redemption in an age of cancellation and damning articles.

UGLY certainly isn’t a pleasant listen, and at various points it’s too extreme to be categorised as rap or rock, but many of these tracks are brilliantly executed and their emotional power and impact put Slowthai in a unique position. All we can hope is that he has found a way out of his woes in real life.

Rolling Stone UK
With a new sonic direction and powerful introspection at his disposal, Tyron Frampton cements his position as one of British rap's true greats.
80
Gigwise

With guests ranging from Fontaines DC, Shygirl and long-term producer Kwes Darko, the album is by far his most accomplished to date. You’d be hard pressed to find an artist more complete than Slowthai in the industry right now.

80
The Needle Drop
slowthai's third album is high-impact sonically and emotionally.
80
The Telegraph

Ugly makes for difficult listening in places, but that’s not to say it isn’t often brilliant.

80
The Independent
After a disappointing second album, this is a direct transmission from a brilliant, beleaguered brain.
80
Exclaim!

Ugly finds a complicated sort of happiness, one that embraces, however painfully, its creator's weaknesses and anxieties. Growth isn't always pretty.

80
The Line of Best Fit

With a wholehearted desire to make music purely for himself, UGLY displays an artistic freedom regained, reconnecting with what drew him to music in the first place.

80
AllMusic
It's clearly a challenging, confrontational album, but it also feels like the artist's purest expression yet.
75
Beats Per Minute

“I give you everything I’ve got / Until the last fucking bone I have”, slowthai declares, the word ‘have’ descending into a distressed, feral cry – a testament to the unparalleled catharsis that runs through UGLY, and that makes such a challenging LP ultimately worthwhile.

70
Loud and Quiet

Intense, disastrous, and confrontational, but also, tender, empathetic, and reflective, UGLY is a record routinely hijacked by its shadow.

70
Clash
A bold attempt to embrace his contradictions, this is a project held together by the brutal strength of slowthai’s performances. Amid all his flaws, fractures, and fissures, his day-glo emerges intact. U Gotta Love Yourself, after all.
70
Slant Magazine
The British rapper embraces a caffeinated punk sound that suggests a cross between Cockney Rejects and Dizzee Rascal.
65
Spectrum Culture

UGLY is an uneven, flawed record, but it contains enough interesting moments that will be genuinely thrilling to see what Slowthai does next.

60
The Arts Desk
His storytelling on “Never Again” is effortless and matches anything off his debut.
60
Evening Standard
This album is menacing, extreme and the lyrics frequently sound despairing.
56
HipHopDX
The bland writing for the indie rock-leaning songs is made even more glaring by slowthai’s general lack of dynamism as a singer. His vocal inflections change, but his voice itself doesn’t carry much range, so you’re left with passable versions of songs other artists have already done.
55
Pitchfork
The British rapper’s third album is likely to be his most polarizing: He trades rapping and electronic beats for ballads and rage rock. The results are largely underwhelming.

UGLY is Slowthai's emotional magnum opus. It starts off with one of the best album openers I have heard this decade, and then goes through many phases until reaching the end in a broken state. I found many songs to be underwhelming after such a strong start, but this project is still really powerful overall, and worth a shot if you're into this post-punk sound at all.

In "UGLY" slowthai turns his anguish and pain into a traumatizing magnum opus

One of the UK's most innovative and cutting-edge artists just leveled up even more. His first two records were both great, with specifically "Nothing Great About Britain" standing out as one of the best UK Hip Hop records of the last decade. In that LP the heavily punk-inspired song "Doorman" was up until recently my favorite slowthai song. Since then I always hoped he would experiment ... read more

That’s all I can think to say, deranged. The beats are intense and at times industrial, blending elements of post punk and hiphop to provide a sound palette that really lends itself to the extreme anger and heartbreak intended in the project.

The main star is slowthai himself. His vocal performance, especially on songs like tourniquet, sounds like he is ripping himself apart, putting all his emotions out there for the world to see. This is done in tandem with the lyrics which talk about ... read more

One of the most overlooked albums of this year. It sounds great and feels like such real emotions. Absolutely beautiful and genuine album.

From a high energetic opener to a broken, depressing end. This was an emotional and sonically enjoyable rollercoaster of an album. This is definitely slowthai's best album and also top 20 to 15, maybe 10 albums of the year. Really an amazing album. This might get me into the post-punk world.
