CRITIC REVIEWS

AllMusic

While it could have benefitted from some editing, Skin still shows a lot of growth -- it's more mature, and more memorable, than Flume.

Consequence of Sound

Gearing up to be the next EDM crossover talent, Flume’s sophomore effort, Skin, showcases a producer at ease with all of the sounds moving tickets at America’s major festival events: hip-hop, indie pop, and EDM.

70
Slant Magazine

Considering its bob and weave between dance pop and disorienting noise, Skin ultimately doesn't carve out a discernable identity for the 24 year-old DJ, but it offers compelling looks into what this identity could be.

The Line of Best Fit

While so much EDM sounds the same right now, his tracks are thankfully hard to pigeonhole - as they weave industrial, deep house, dubstep, minimal and hip hop influences into a cohesive whole that’s both danceable and perfect for sofa listening.

Rolling Stone

That restless versatility is all over the LP, generating the emotional crests and sensory overload a festival crowd demands, but with a nuance that'll make it work even if you aren't shirtless in the desert.

Pretty Much Amazing

Skin is ambitious to a fault, as its motley crew of collaborators and 16-track length prove, and some of the choices Flume makes on this album make very little sense.

The sum suggests that he’s an earnest collaborator, flashier but still casting around for a distinct identity.

The Needle Drop
Australian producer Flume brings the sound of wonky to a commercial audience with his latest album.

Game-changing album. That is all.

The best electronic album in the last 10 years.

If you're a producer, you'll be able to see how ridiculously beautiful this album is. The experimentation, the melodies, simply awe-struck at how amazing it is.

To me, this album sounds like his debut but with a much bigger budget. The production is well mixed and arranged, the recording quality is more crisp and the vocal guests are more high profile. So if you were a fan of the first album, expect to enjoy this one. As a producer, Flume is maturing more and more imo, his instrumentals here range from uplifting and awe-inspiring to grimy and hard-hitting, it's very impressive. Not a lot of issues here for me tbh, I think 'You Know' could have been ... read more

Lots of potential to create a truly breathtaking electronic dance record was here, but it was thrown away and replaced with big-budget features and insultingly average production. Had a few tracks been cut, this would have been a pretty solid ~45 minute album. But the inclusion of excessively average featured artists and bland production was the biggest contributor to the downfall of Skin.
