The Waeve is a fascinating project, if somewhat a slow burner, filled with gorgeous instrumentation that will transport the listener to another realm.
Overall, The WAEVE is an unpredictable album that shows streaks of brilliance with a genuinely entertaining mix of cinematic British rock and indie pop, brought to life with polished vocals.
This isn’t the Coxon of Coffee & TV or Freaking Out, nor indeed the Dougall you may remember from the perfect girl-band pop of Pull Shapes. Instead, it’s a mediative, often beautiful record that often has the capacity to surprise and delight. Just be sure you like saxophones.
Tightening up some loose ends might have made The Waeve more cohesive, but at its best, it's elegant, unpredictable music made for the sheer rejuvenating pleasure of it.
Their album is a woozy thing, underpinned with analogue synths and elegant Krautrockin’ rhythms, emanating a mystic melancholia.
The WAEVE is a collaborative project between English musicians Rose Elinor Dougall and Graham Coxon.
Dougall is not a musician I'm familiar with but this record triggered some interest within me to discover her art in 2023. Coxon on the other hand is no stranger to me, being a key factor as to why Blur is one of my favourite bands -"13" is my favourite album and very solid as a solo artist as well -I love "The Sky Is Too High" and his soundtracks for "The End of The ... read more
With Gorillaz still going strong and Blur being in Damon Alban’s rear view, guitarist Graham Coxon has keep trucking along working on his own projects, with his latest being a collaborative project with ex-Pipettes member Rose Elinor Dougall as The WAEVE. Their self titled release brings interesting idea by providing easy flowing art rock tunes that blends both their voices together well and some occasional cool horn arrangements and impressive guitar work from Coxon. Some tracks go by ... read more
The surprisingly fruitful cooperation between Blur guitarist Graham Coxon and former Pipettes member Elinor Dougall results successfully in the (for this duo debut) album. Some songs attracted my attention in particular:
Can I Call Yo
Over and Over
Sleepwalking
Alone and Free
It's got some pretty cool songs but it didn't really capture my attention.
Some of the songs didn't need to be as long as they were but nothing on here is bad, there just wasn't anything special on here. There might be a couple songs on here that I'll probably listen to again but most of what's on here is not really my thing.
