The Guardian
Frontman Jacob Lusk is nothing short of incredible on the trio’s debut album, a powerful half-hour of top-tier songwriting that proves Gabriels are far more than soul revivalists.

The Arts Desk

From the unashamedly rhapsodic to the surprisingly tender, Angels & Queens, Part I touches the heart at every turn.

Louder Than War

Angels and Queens is nothing short of remarkable ... It is a cinematic, dramatic collection, awash with lush orchestration that provides a sumptuous platform for that voice.

Albumism
This debut album clocks in at a sparse 27 minutes, but those minutes pack a punch far greater than you might expect. There is hope, heartbreak and more in between—all with every drop of emotion wrung out by the sheer wonder of Lusk’s voice.

The Telegraph
Produced by Kendrick Lamar’s longstanding producer Sounwave, Angels & Queens is intricately arranged and replete with daring orchestrations. It somehow manages to comprise mid-paced music you can dance to and dance rhythms you can chill to.

DIY

There’s so much going on across the release it’s easy to spot how the LA-based outfit have garnered the industry whispers they have so far.

AllMusic

Regret, longing, and grief fill the other songs, but Lusk's soaring, whole-hearted articulations of hope and reassurance prevent this transfixing half-album from being an unqualified downer.

Mojo
Any sense that the listener is being short-changed is blown away by the sheer quality of the writing and production on offer.

Cool funk with a crazy sound from Gabriels, the album is filled with orchestrations and wind instruments, Sounwave producer Kendrick Lamar worked on this record.

Equal parts ethereally groovy and cinematically soulful, this is certainly an emotional enigma of a project, evoking a sense of a higher purpose but setting no clear direction to follow; it's an overwhelmingly passionate endeavour but in service of what? There's no thesis here, only doctrine - I feel both lost and found, as though my soul has been touched but I can't read the message carved within.

Uplifting soul ballads that are warm and enjoyable.

This is a chill soul record that's apparently (partially) produced by Sounwave, who is Kendrick Lamar's go-to producer.

It's a very good record, but it falls short of being great.

After 3 listens it still feels like I haven't heard this, like its fine and I enjoy it but there nothing particularly memorable about this that sticks with me.
