Consistently challenging and infectious at once, Black Terry Cat is the kind of album that comes along only once in a while, where bold goes down smooth.

Drawing from so many musical diasporas and questioning the way that different existences intersect, Rubinos' second album is American music with a different story to tell.

The Needle Drop
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Xenia Rubinos backs her tracks with an exciting fusion of art pop, funk, soul, hip hop, and R&B.

While her voice can be sharply harsh in a way that’s both dynamic and challenging, on Don’t Wanna Be and I Won’t Say, it’s her soulfulness that stuns. Ultimately, it’s Rubinos’s unflinching lyrics that linger long after Black Terry Cat ends.

Xenia Rubinos' sophomore album saw her going into a more soulful funk pop direction rather than the jazz art rock sound built upon her debut which I think is perfectly sound because one of the strongest aspect of her debut was how powerful Xenia Rubinos' vocals were and that is carrier forward onto this record in a progression in sound which sounds natural. Favorite tracks : DON'T WANNA BE, LONELY LOVER and LL.
First of all, it must be said that Xenia Rubinos is a phenomenal live entertainer; having had the opportunity to see her perform, I can attest that even the most casual of fans should attempt to see one of her shows (once that’s a thing again). “Black Terry Cat” perhaps doesn’t quite capture the sheer energy and force Rubinos display in a live setting — or contain a track as singularly arresting as “Hair Receding” — but it nonetheless showcases ... read more
