AllMusic

Consistently challenging and infectious at once, Black Terry Cat is the kind of album that comes along only once in a while, where bold goes down smooth.

Pitchfork

Drawing from so many musical diasporas and questioning the way that different existences intersect, Rubinos' second album is American music with a different story to tell.

The Needle Drop
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Xenia Rubinos backs her tracks with an exciting fusion of art pop, funk, soul, hip hop, and R&B.

While her voice can be sharply harsh in a way that’s both dynamic and challenging, on Don’t Wanna Be and I Won’t Say, it’s her soulfulness that stuns. Ultimately, it’s Rubinos’s unflinching lyrics that linger long after Black Terry Cat ends.

The music itself, which is an organic combination of various musical genres, is really awesome. But there's only one fatal problem. Her voice does not convey any emotions, get on my nerves at times. Sorry, Xenia.

She had me at Don’t Wanna Be, great rhythm, endless heart and pointed emotion. Then the rest of the album plays rhythmically and emotionally engaging, your in this spell from start to end, and it doesn’t disappoint. It stays low key, and with it being a fusion of soul, funk, hip hop and r&b, this album comes with roots, stomach and direction.

cool and creative songs here but a little inconsistent and ultimately falls short for me. A lot of potential here though

Edit: This albums is growing on me. Xenia's voice and quirky tendencies make this a creative and exciting listen. Right? is among my favorites of the year
