Rolling Stone UK

On the whole, Gloria achieves a good balance of the many facets of what Smith is able to do as a vocalist.

The Telegraph

Gloria puts Smith in such exalted ranks, affirming their claim to be the world’s first non-binary superstar with a decidedly oddball album, blessed with a big heart and a bigger voice.

NME
An album that’s rich musically, thematically and above all, emotionally. Sam Smith has never sounded better because they’ve never been more themselves.
80
Rolling Stone
The singer’s fourth LP features guests like Kim Petras, Koffee, and Ed Sheeran, but their own personal growth is at the heart of the music.
70
Clash
Decadent, dance-fuelled and defiant, Smith’s fourth album not only showcases their impressive vocal versatility and musical prowess, but it also shows an edgier and more playful side both to their personality and music.
70
DIY
“‘Gloria’ got me through some dark times and was a beacon for me in my life,” they previously said of the album, and it’s likely this collection of songs will do the same for many who hear it.

Beats Per Minute

Gloria is a frequently satisfying yet uneven statement of self-love and confidence that heralds a new era, both musically and personally, for Sam who proves that it is just as equally an act of vulnerability to show your happiness, as it is your sadness.

62
Pitchfork
Sam Smith remains a bit of a pop paradox, a trailblazing figure who often settles into well-trodden songwriting.

Exclaim!

Overall, Gloria seesaws between being compelling and generic, with just enough highs to keep you interested throughout. Smith is somewhat burdened by their ridiculous level of talent — with the vocal ability to make anything sound captivating, they often don't soar to the heights they're capable of.

60
The Guardian
With hints of R&B, trap and disco, Smith’s fourth album tiptoes away from their trademark piano-led ballads – but isn’t the ‘edgy’ departure they think it is.
60
The Independent
Smith’s lovely voice can feel like the aural equivalent of watching a lava lamp.
60
AllMusic

It's largely unobtrusive and serviceable, distinguished mostly by Smith's elastic voice and increased specificity and complexity to the reflective and romantic songs.

60
The Observer
The singer’s fourth album ups the tempo – and makes history – but stops short of fulfilling its potential as a fun-filled stomper.
60
The Sydney Morning Herald
It feels as though Smith’s music is yet to catch up with their increasingly free and playful persona.
60
The Irish Times
Smith’s fourth album is more emotionally mature, with some glorious moments and a few bangers, but also too many duds.
60
musicOMH
A fourth album features Kim Petras, Ed Sheeran, Jessie Reyez and Koffee, and showcases a voice that makes everything sound listenable. But of terrific moments there are too few.

The Line of Best Fit

In the process, much of what Smith hoped to express throughout Gloria gets drowned out in just thirty-three minutes of runtime. While by no means a bad record, Sam Smith’s Gloria is largely hit-or-miss.

50
Slant Magazine
As much as Smith tries to step out of the box, the singer still sounds most comfortable playing to their previously established strengths.
40
Evening Standard
Smith’s voice remains a remarkable instrument but it is asked to carry songs that feature little else of interest.

A revealing and uplifting album about accepting who you are, and your sexuality. I expected to clown on this due to how awful the singles are, but everything else is very pretty and open. The singles make sense in this project, so even though they stick out in a bad way, they are forgivable.

This is the first time I can say Sam Smith has peaked my interest in any regard. This is a solid release, and something to be proud of.

From an artist I have liked every album so far this was a real bummer with only one song that I might have another listen to. This record felt really boring, we knew they were changing it up with the last album, which actually was really refreshing, but this wasn't it.

I was rooting for this album to be honest. While I don't love "Unholy," I consider it to be a ridiculously overhated song that could've been better but is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Unfortunately, it's one of the only interesting songs on this album, and most of the other tracks bore me to tears, even down to a song using the same 4 basic chords that everyone clowned on Kid LAROI for using in Without You. This plays it far too safe for its own good, which sucks ... read more
