If you needed anything else to convince you of the Velvet's superiority, here's an 80 year old John Cale showing that he's amongst the best veteran '60s/'70s musicians.

There are two ypes of veteran musicians - those who stick to what they know to varying results (think Iggy Pop, Yes, Bob Dylan), and the artists who understand that evolution is important. Of course, you have Scott Walker and Lou Reed who took such a drastic turn towards the end of their careers that you'd get whiplash ... read more

Many-a-goosebump with this one. Incredibly moving, especially for a man at his age.

"Mercy", de John Cale, até que é um trabalho de art pop bastante instigante, porém a sua exagerada longa duração faz com que tudo fique tão chato tão rápido que pouco dá pra se gostar realmente.

(PS: Weyes Blood me decepcionou bastante em "STORY OF BLOOD".

Like Scott Walker's Tilt, John Cale's Mercy is an experimental album in the later part of his career. This album is slow but not boring, haunting but not scary. Like a piece of firewood slowly burning in the furnace, John Cale's voice strays through these 12 mellow tracks. Mercy shows how John Cale grasps the perfect pace for the album. Though collaborating with various artists, the theme of the album is never disrupted (even with Animal Collective). EVERLASTING DAYS and NIGHT CRAWLING are two ... read more

John Cale is 5 years older than Iggy pop but managed to make the far superior record despite that, proving to me that I probably should check out more of the velvet undergrounds material. Mercy isn't a perfect record, it runs a little long and has a couple duds, but is overall a really nice cohesive listen.

This album's existence is a miracle. The man's 80. Truly don't know how he does it. All the features on this album are just so tasteful and effective. You can tell Cale thrives on them, needs them maybe, but he's still on top of it all. Still doing his own fucking shit, still throwing in the weirdest sounds and the clunkiest, strangest lines, and he still manages to make it sound exciting. Reminded me of Bowie's Blackstar at times, except Cale doesn't seem to be the least bit interested in ... read more

While I'm not familiar with any of John Cale's previous work outside of The Velvet Underground, I'm astounded that he's 80 and still pushing boundaries in art pop and working with newer artists. I particularly love the sprawling nature and haunting tone of this record. That being said, some of these tracks don't justify their length despite having some cool ideas (see 'Marilyn Monroe's Legs (Beauty Elsewhere)' and 'The Legal Status Of Ice').

Favourite Tracks: Mercy, Noise Of You, Story Of ... read more

Inoffensive in its attempt to sound relevant with a solid handful of tracks that really work. Although I found his tracks without a guest to be among the albums best, the crew Cale surrounds himself with make this a bit more exciting. Sylvan Esso, AC, and Tei Shi come out the strongest of those featured with the latter providing an assist on the albums one true standout.

WHAT A START TO 2023
This is my first album from this year and i already know it's going to be in my top 5 minimum at the end of the year. Never heard of John Cale prior to this, all i knew is that there was this 80 year old mf who made some forward thinking art pop this january. Art pop is my favorite genre so i decided to give it a try and man it did not disappoint. I first turned it on during the day, but after hearing the first song i decided that it would be better to listen later at night ... read more

Cale in his 80 with the new stunning artpop album in a long time seems to be still at the top of the game.

Aprende algo Iggy Pop.

Overly long directionless drivel.

I feel like forcing myself to praise this album just because "omg he's 80 but the music is so modern" would be kind of dumb, so I'm gonna try not to oversaturate what this album is, even though it does have a lot of charm to it.
John Cale's vocals on this project are really soothing and easy to listen to, they actually manage to shine through the instrumentals. Not that I'm surprised, I mean, it's John Cale, but it's still nice to see the man doing so well with his vocals. The ... read more

John Cale goes beyond pop standards again. The new album, hovering on the borders of art-pop, ambient, electronic music and alternative, expands the scope of modern sound. Cale's airy, melancholic musings lead the listener down winding paths, the final point of which is impossible to guess. Absolutely solid, slightly viscous, voluminous and rich album, which cannot be called a purely musical experience. This is a visual-emotional experience, accompanied by Cale's vocals and his musical ... read more

Recently punk legend Iggy Pop released the album Every Loser, some people liked it, some didn't, I avoided it. Theres sort of a rule with music where you make your best music when you're young. Its what I call the Robert Smith theory of music where you make your best greatest work of art before the age of 30, and while I think that you make make great stuff long past that it tends to be 20 years into your career you're probably not going to top yourself. Hence why I tend to avoid these types of ... read more

With a stellar cast of features alongside him, John Cale continues this electronic modern pop adventure going into his 80s with a view of not stopping at any one particular sound. To have that desire to keep pushing boundaries at that age is amazing and hugely respected.

With the tracks themselves, there's a grittiness to how the electronics come together, but I think given who is working on this album I think that's by design, and it works to create a slightly sinister mood that's echoed by ... read more

It seems to be becoming more and more common that artists over 60 years old put out quality content. But over 80 years old? That's pretty much just reserved for Leonard Cohen, until now. In places, it kind of reminded me of American Utopia weirdly, which I was a fan of, but it is much moodier and slow-burning than the quirky optimistic David Byrne record. The only song I didn't really dig was "Everlasting Days", I found some of the vocals kind of annoying and the strings reminded me ... read more

saw this album getting a tone of good reviews release day, so added it to my list.
Its neat, im sure there are plenty of listeners out there who will and are loving this.
Listened up to 'Story of Blood' before i completely lost interest honestly this project does nothing for me.
