CRITIC REVIEWS

The Line of Best Fit

This release is not a cliched, sulky attempt to do something new fuelled by the frustrating necessity for a narrative to complement their art. Instead, Sunlit Youth sounds like music Local Natives want to make.

80
DIY

The beauty of ‘Sunlit Youth’ is in its optimism rather than its pragmatism – a record that cements their status as one of our most special proponents of emotionally-charged guitar music.

80
Drowned in Sound

A vibrant patchwork of a record, full of ideas written in places as far-flung as Malaysia, Nicaragua and Hawaii, and sounds ranging from lovelorn blues to trip-hop beats.

75
Pretty Much Amazing

They chose a more difficult road, tiptoeing the line between their past works while incorporating shades of mainstream indie rock, doing so with minimal missteps.

70
Exclaim!

Sunlit Youth may not be the massive leap forward some fans may have wanted, but it's far from a step back. Instead, it's yet another steady offering from Local Natives, who continue to build on a solid catalogue.

AllMusic

While in the process of embracing more electronics they lose a bit of their organic warmth, particularly compared to their debut, Local Natives hang on to a significant amount of their quirkiness and rhythmic flair.

67
Consequence of Sound

These are traditional Local Natives songs dressed in a glittering neon overcoat ... But the advanced upgrades too often weigh them down rather than providing slick new machinery to blast them into another stratosphere.

63
Pitchfork

The California indie-pop band goes bigger and broader, leaving behind some of the more intricate songwriting of their past.

Under The Radar

This lack of immediacy is representative of Sunlit Youth as a whole; it feels overproduced, like some of the essence of what has defined this band for two albums has been polished away. In its place is a more palatable but distinctly less exciting listen.

To me this sounds like what would've happened if foals tried to make a pop record. The melodies are uninteresting and generic, and the vocals don't add too much. While there are some high points (fountain of youth and coins, specifically) this album is a major disappointment from a band whose debut showed so much promise

Pretty good indie rock/pop record. And digging the album art too.

This is more for newcomers... I think they're trying to grab a new audience with this album. I can still feel some Local Natives elements, but as an overall it can be confused with any other indie rock band of the moment. There's some nice tracks and you can pass through all of the 12 without cringing (except Jellyfish, I swear this is terribly mixed), however you don't feel like any of them has awakened something in you... they're just ok. It's kinda sad after their previous efforts.

One of my favorite bands of all time, Local Natives release what I perceive to be their worst record to date. It is still not bad, but far from what we saw in Gorilla Manor or Hummingbird.

It feels like this record is Local Natives having fun with their sound more than actually improving upon what they had already developed sonically.

Favorite tracks: Coins, Villainy, Masters.
