Through its subtlety, Classics celebrates the nature and resilience of the human spirit while simultaneously acknowledging its defects, everything and anything you could ever ask an album to be, and nothing more, which is just enough.
For all the technology they bring to the table, Ratatat are soulful and savvy, putting everything in its right place and locking the listener in.
The Brooklyn, NY duo make what can only be described as rocktronica. Classics picks up where the band’s eponymous debut left off and improves on Ratatat’s unique sound.
Laid back as it is, what Classics lacks is the force of purpose to overcome its target audience of hipster kids' aversion to—or limited ability for—dancing. Which, however technically accomplished an album it may be, is a pretty significant problem for an ostensible dance record.
The name of this album is Classics, and while Ratatat’s already proven themselves a fun, benign potion of glam, garage, math rock, and dance stewed in mixing board plasma, the title’s too big for its britches.

Here’s an old review that I did a couple months back. Let me add some context to today’s theme. If you look into Ratatat’s biggest tracks on Spotify or on Apple Music, you’ll find that their most popular contributions are with Kid Cudi’s debut album. When it comes to their separate ... read more
Waiter! Waiter! More boring 2000’s Indietronica albums please!
Because unfortunately that is what we are dealing with on Ratatat’s “Classics”. It is ok background music. No seriously like there is barely anything on here that’s worth an ounce of attention but it’s not horrible at all. It’s just there’s so much filler and the production just doesn’t seem like it’s trying to do much at all and it comes to my dismay that that was the ... read more
Classics is music to live by. To study to. To fall in love. To go on car rides. It was just a perfect Ipod album to have back in 2006 along with Postal Service. There was this golden era of fully composed music based in indie sensibilities that was undeniably good. The subtle beats and grooves to this carry that melancholic bowed guitar style to new groovier heights. There is a fair share of overlap between this album and their previous, much like Death From Above 1979... There was this ... read more

I love when artists just have a knack for sound design, I also love bands who express so much creativity and ideas through instrumental music only, no lyrics just a groovy stylish sound. It does feel like the lbp2 soundfont, it’s definitely an album of the era. Hell this predates that game and sounds like it came straight from it; it’s a sound that I feel is too early for 2006, it definitely feels early 2010’s which I absolutely adore.
Such a playful style, the cherry on top ... read more
