Kinda wish more of the album was like 'Friend of the Devil' but for hippy bs this is about the pinnacle.

Imagine being a crazy psychedelic jam band, and then going to the studio and making something this country and folk influenced. How???

American Beauty is the quintessential American folk rock record. Along with its sister album, Workingman's Dead, it saw the Dead moving from a psychedelic sound to a folksy, country sound. Box of Rain - Solid start, a new strummed guitar followed by two harmonising singers, both of the male persuasion. It's getting even better, this is a really great opener and everything I was hoping for. Lyrics are interesting, guitars are super pleasant and catchy. Vocals are lovely. Nice little guitar solo towards the middle with a hint of a country twang which is never unappreciated. I had a lot of friends in college who were Deadheads from birth, it was just something that was baked into their DNA. It wasn't just the music the band made, it was the whole culture behind them. It was, frankly, just a bit too much. The history was too long, and a lot of the jam records, or bootlegs they played were not for me. This studio record was one of the exceptions.
