Metal Sucks

Though it’s only February, Anno 1696 is going to find itself on a myriad of “year’s best” lists and I believe most fans of the band will gladly rank this new record as one their favorites.

Distorted Sound

INSOMNIUM‘s consistency has been a cornerstone to their longevity and with Anno 1696 the Finns deliver another masterclass of melodic death metal.

Metal Injection

Beyond being an essential entry into Insomnium's catalog, Anno 1696 is a highpoint of modern Finnish melodic death metal as a whole.

Still hell-bent on evolution, while continuing to honor their original masterplan, INSOMNIUM have always been great, but now they're even greater. "Anno 1696" proves it.

Metal Hammer

Melodeath verterans revisit the darkest of ages.

Long-time fans will not be disappointed and new fans will be harvested. Dig this up from the ditches but burn no witches.

I like this. This is somehow dark and uplifting at the same time. It fuses modern death metal with old school heavy metal without sounding corney. Some of the guitar parts do sound like they could have come from the 1980s, but there are equal amounts of brutality added in to keep it dark and dreary. The screams are in a nice ... read more
