Overall, this is undeniable rap therapy. Like the rest of us, Slug and Ant are just trying to get by, and for the most part, they’re succeeding.

Exclaim!

Between Ant's eclectic, subtle production and Slug's equally nuanced lyricism, Fishing Blues stands out as one of the best hip-hop LPs of the year thus far. Slug's seasoned vet couplets are especially refreshing, making growing old and wise sound undeniably fly.

Consequence of Sound

Aging has clearly given him the opportunity to become a new and improved version of himself. Consequently, Fishing Blues is a more mature variant of Atmosphere.

AllMusic

Strange how a little pride, nostalgia, and thankfulness make Slug and Ant sound a heck of a lot like Macklemore and Lewis, but Fishing Blues isn't so much an indie version of The Heist as it is a more satisfied and slow version of Southsiders. Check that one first, then come back here for a relaxed alternative.

Pitchfork

Fishing Blues has no stakes—with or without this record, the Atmosphere legacy is cemented—and the sloppy writing, disinterested rapping, and overall conservative artistic decisions seem to reflect that.

40
Spin

Fishing Blues feels so rote you’ll have to play the old records to remember that it’s not the Atmosphere norm.

The bars are good, the subject matter is cool, the production isn't terrible but the hooks on this thing are sooo bad! In my eyes, these are some of the most forgettable and lifeless choruses i've heard in hip-hop all year, just overall it's an incredibly bland album. Only listen if you're a big fan of these guys.

A disappointing release following his previous album. In fact, "Fishing Blues" is missing everything that made "Southsiders" so good, namely: Substantial content, well-crafted lyrics, and catchy choruses. However, perhaps worst of all, it's just plain boring.

Notable Songs: Nothing to note.
