Sakamoto's "async" from 2017 was a gorgeous release I fell in love with that displayed a very emotional, fragile, and intimate vision from the composer. Much of this sound came from the painful feelings surrounding his cancer diagnosis, which has now worsened. "12" offers an even darker, colder, and more isolated sound representative of Sakamoto's recent hardships, a difficult wall of emotion to avoid while listening. Prepare yourself to fall somewhat into his shoes, and ... read more

It isn't often that the artist's breathing is just as much part of the music as the soft piano keys.

It's incredible how context can make this even more of a powerful record.

Ryuichi Sakamoto was originally diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014. While that is in remission, he has since shared in 2021 that he is now battling rectal cancer, and his health has and energy has significantly deteriorated since.

'12' is Sakamoto's first non-soundtrack album since 2017's 'async', and it is a beutiful work that goes beyond a standard ambient album. Through the majority of the track list, we can hear ... read more

Life is fragile.

If there's one thing that scares me the most, it's death. One minute you can be having the time of your life; the next, you are lying in a hospital bed, inches away from death. No matter what one does, death is an inescapable reality that everyone will face at some point. Worse than that, it can be so immediate and unexpected that people do not have the time to truly grasp and come to terms with their situation. I harken back to the death of my great-grandmother late last ... read more

I know this isn’t a full-length review, but I just wanna appreciate the AOTY community for recognizing Ryuichi Sakamoto, former member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, which is one of my favourite bands out there. You guys here have great taste!

This album is good, by the way.

Os pontos altos deste álbum ... read more

44 years since his acclaimed debut 'Thousand Knives Of', Sakamoto is still making quality music this time in the form of sparse, ambient piano pieces recorded over the space of about a year. Given the context of the album though, with Sakamoto's experience of "living alongside cancer" after his second diagnosis, I wish I felt a connection to more than just a few of these tracks, considering how much emotion was obviously put into them.

I don't know how to review this album without being biased
For the past few days, I listen to this album and still don't know how to express this album perfectly
I think for the best let the album speak for itself
This album feels much darker than async. Especially after Yukihiro Takahashi passed away.
In this album, Ryuichi Sakamoto finally really releases his Swansong to the world
If async tells how much Sakamoto feels after he got diagnosed with Cancer. Then 12 tells how much Sakamoto ... read more

A powerful listen, knowing what the creator of this project is going through adds to it. This record works because of its simplicity, using very little to create a lot.

Death is, unfortunately, something that no one can run away from. Not the strongest of warriors, the smartest of intellectuals, not even the most talented of artists, as we have seen in music again and again. However, the most interesting thing to me is when artists directly confront their death, such as the subject of this review – Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Ryuichi Sakamoto is a legendary Japanese musician and composer. Once a member of electronic music pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra, Mr. ... read more

It's impossible not to hear Sakamoto's vision of fleeting mortality on this work, a gorgeous yet melancholy collection of wonderfully sparse and reserved piano and ethereal ambience. Sakamoto once again shows his knack for knowing that it's not how many notes you play, but it's how you choose them. The recordings are immensely personal and intimate, with the artist's breathing being very audible along with the creaking of his chair. It's beautiful and heart breaking, and one of generational ... read more

'12' revela 60 minutos de sintetizadores pesados e um piano denso capaz de criarem uma real imersividade melancólica. Imagino que esse não é o tipo de álbum que revisitarei com frequência, dependerá do emocional e das circunstâncias contextuais, pois ele retrata uma complexidade sonora que precisa de tempo e paciência para agir.

Na peça que abre o álbum, '20210310', o piano não é presente, o que se destaca ... read more

(by Google)
Self-healing esoteric music by a theoretician musician with stage 4 cancer. its simple presentation. However, one might think that it was just showing the truth as it is, but from the fact that the cover art was done by Lee Ufan, it is clear that it is focused on the idea of "Mono-ha". The information inferred from the position of the sound and the sound, the crossover with the daily life woven by noise and melody, the imagery landscape drawn by the drone, etc., etc., are ... read more

I'm not one who listens much to classical music, so I don't quite know how to rate it. What I do know is that this album made me cry at least twice, and there was an eerie quality to the things outside the pianos that were in the recordings such as his breathing and the slow groans of the pedal. It definitely feels like a statement about continuing on despite how difficult it can be. It just feels like there's something more that's left missing to really push this album over the edge for me.

I’ve never been crazy about classical piano music but yeah this is just depressing. Excellent musicianship but incredibly sad. Hope he stays strong. Cancer sucks.
