Here we find The Bad Seeds at their most refined and intricate sounding, with the album cover speaking volumes to what one might expect as the skeleton of this record. The piano balladry is a strong shift in the groups sound but allows Nick Cave's vocals to stand out more than perhaps any of their previous records, and there really is a child-like fresh feeling to this release. I don't care if I die saying it, this is the best Nick Cave album. It finds the perfect place between the intensity of earlier Bad Seeds records and the moving tenderness of their later works. It's a thoughtful introspection into faith, love, and sorrow, which is everything a Bad Seeds album should be.
