There's something about The Strokes' debut that feels undeniably classic. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what it is, but even after being ripped off for over a decade, Is This It basically sounds as fresh as ever. Is This It is one of those rare albums that isn't necessarily defined by innovation or depth, instead charming millions by being simple and unpretentious, sharp but never cynical. Like Weezer's Blue Album before it, what makes Is This It is so appealing is that anyone could ... read more

a fantastic record, that isn't up for debate. I just never find myself coming back in favor of the new Voidz album which I enjoy better for its textures

This album should absolutely be considered a modern classic and deserves all the praise it receives. Every single song is just so incredibly catchy, fun, and clever. The strokes definitely weren't the first "post-punk revival" band, but they definitely the ones that gave it a good rep.
Best Songs: I don't think I can narrow it down. Listen to the whole thing please

This album is one of the album that kinda made me i remember listening to this in middle school and loving it kinda became my favorite album.

The album itself is great it's one of the most influential indie rock albums and it just b u m p s all the way through with some real emotional highs like last night and hard to explain and it's a very consistent album with it only being 35 minutes long and out adds replay value which is a great value that albums should have tbh

I honestly tried several times to understand the popularity of this record among critics and after several listens I simply have to admit that I personally just don’t get it. I see why a mass audience would love this band’s sound–it’s simple, straightforward, melodic and urgent rock music with a lo-fi, retro touch which certainly pleases every traditionalist while also being modern and different enough to appeal to indie heads worldwide. It features some captive riffs ... read more

When listening to this album for the very first time, I felt like I had already heard it many times before. That's probably because I have already listened to so many more, newer, alternative rock albums, which were heavily influenced by The Strokes. Is This It set a sort of blueprint for an abundance of newer rock outfits to follow in the future.
Even though I'm not crazy about the album, there are tons of moments throughout that are what I really look for in every album I check out. I ... read more

I can totally appreciate the influence of this album on 2000s music and how cohesive this is. The production is interesting but awesome which gives this project an laid back and fun atmosphere. The vocal delivery is my favoutrite aspect here. But I cant really see myself coming back to this too much and I think this is a bit overrated.

One day, Is This It will easily be considered one of the greatest records of the turn of the century and rightly so. The Strokes were a band that had no business making music in the time that they did and that makes them all the more important. At a time when pop music was on the rise, Is This It proved that rock and roll was still strong and great bands could still have their time in the spotlight. The arrangements here are tight and the vocal delivery backs those arrangements very well which ... read more

The Strokes´ debut album is one of the most fun and enjoyable rock albums of the 2000s. The indie-rockers managed to approach strong themes like violence, depression, sex and depravity, all in one straight-forward post-punk revival record full of delightfully simple (but groovy) tracks that work really well together. It´s probably the only point after the 2000s when rock-music reached its original exhilarating and uncompromised state, reaching both old and young listeners. An ... read more

The perfect indie rock record. A minimalist, simple record that never puts a foot wrong. Sadly, The Strokes have never come close to living up to the brilliance of this record (and Casablancas's solo work and with the Voidz fits into this category). An often copied but never lived up-to blueprint, this LPs simple guitar driven indie became the blueprint for modern alternative rock music, helping cement alternative and indie rock as the leading form of the genre into the new century. This is a good album, a very good one. However, it is also severely overrated by many. This album is by no stretch a 10/10 album

Amazing album from start to finish. The Strokes draw you in with perfectly entangled guitars, Julian`s hoarsed laidback voice and tight rhythm sections. Every listen makes you want to go to New York.

In reviewing Is This It I will be referring to be referring to both releases (UK & US). Definitively I believe the UK version is the better of the two records. New York City cops has a faster, grittier quality that you don’t quite receive from When It Started off the US release. With that said, I actually prefer the US version because of When It Started. The guitar and melody is for tame and glides softly over the speakers that is more consistent to the rest of the record.

Catchy, hooky, and clever. This is probably one of the best debuts ever. Not to mention, this record came out during a time when Rap Rock/Nu Metal were dominating.

I've been listening to the Strokes non-stop this past week. I knew about the band before and had heard their hits on the radio, but I never really took a deep dive into their discography to find out what they are really about until recently. Like most people, "Is This It" really stood out to me. I've always enjoyed the early 90's aesthetic, and this is the perfect soundtrack for it. The wall of sound that is evoked in every song is somehow able to let you rock out when you are feeling ... read more

This is extremely listenable and well conceived alt-rock. You can jam along to the fantastic instrumentation or you can read further into the lyrics which dive into a plethora of topics such as violence, sex, and of course depression. Technically, there is very little wrong with this album. I could say that this hasn't aged all that well since many albums have arguably since done this sound better, but ultimately that doesn't take away the enjoyment for me.

I feel like this album laid the foundation for many late 2000s rock clichés. It plays wonderfully together with the amazing song-writing, however. The arrangements are not overly complicated and that is where the beauty of this record lies. "Is This It" is not hard to understand and that is why it is so easily enjoyable.

This was one of the handful of albums set the template for how the 2000's was going to be rock style. And for a brief moment, The Strokes struck lightning in a bottle and were, in fact, the best band ever.

In 2001, The Strokes came in with one hell of a sound, a magnetic frontman, airtight, simple instrumentation and an absolutely unimpeachable debut record consisting of eleven perfect pop-rock songs. Is This It was an album that reminded everyone how exciting guitar rock can be when done right, and man, they just did it so right.

A true classic album.

Yeah, many others have already said—it’s pretty overrated. Yes, I see the influence. I can see why it would be catchy and people would like it but honestly it doesn’t quite hook me. The writing is quite decent but it’s just really repetitive and generic-sounding to me. There’s only 2-3 tracks on here that I thought sounded pretty great at best. It’s just not my thing. I’ll probably revisit it again at some point, but I don’t see myself listening ... read more

The music speaks for itself. A standout in the last couple decades. Not much bad to say outside of the slight monotony of the record, but it’s definitely made up for.

Given the influence of The Strokes in modern indie rock, it is pretty easy to write this album off as uninspired on first listen. It does tend to fit in with a lot of other bands you may hear on an indie station. For that reason, this album doesn't resonate a great amount with me, personally.

However, in context, Is This It is a hugely original work. There's a reason this aesthetic is so pervasive now, and it can be drawn back directly to this album.

Also, in the context of garage rock ... read more

In all my life i never expected a debut album to be as good as this one, not a single song inside this masterpiece fails to impress, each one feeling original in Its own way, with an incredible start in the form of is this it, having such an awesome follow-up to that with, in my opinion, their best song, the modern age, to songs that just give you an unexplicable positive vibe like barely legal, hard to explain and take it or leave it.
The rest of the album just continues blowing my mind with ... read more

all of the songs here are great and powerful rock tunes, but the bad thing is that the formula doesn't change at all during the album and some people could get tired even with the short duration of 35 minutes. Still kind of a classic album for me
