A.V. Club

RKives’ condensed portrait of the band’s timeline provides a clearer view of what all four of the band’s members brought to the table, particularly Sennett.

Under The Radar

While this collection is a welcome, if brief, return to the band's heyday, it naturally doesn't stand on its own as an album.

Drowned in Sound

There is enough wry humour and emotional weight on display here to underline the fact that for their eight or nine years as a going concern, Rilo Kiley shared a very special alchemy indeed, and one that drew from an increasingly diverse creative well.

If not everything here is essential, rkives acts both as a loving rapprochement with Rilo Kiley’s diehard fans and a surprisingly coherent introduction for new listeners.

rkives is a full-sounding collection that reads like a long-lost Rilo Kiley album from the early-2000s, a fact that will satisfy the many fans maddened by their late-career stab at the mainstream, Under the Blacklight.

Consequence of Sound

It still seems as though some of RKives’ strongest offerings have an appeal beyond reminiscence—this was always a group that stood out from the guitar-swinging crowd.

Even if the whole thing is a bit messy, it winds up being a nice reminder of all of Rilo Kiley's attributes.

In total, RKives serves its purpose more than adequately. While plenty of the set is for collectors only, Rilo Kiley has provided a number of songs as strong as their previously released material.

'Rkives' doesn’t shed any light on Rilo Kiley, there’s no standout defining track that was flippantly consigned to a b-side or the vaults. Instead, it’s a collection which provides more satisfaction than surprise.
