As rollicking as it often is, Heart Like a Levee is a deeply intimate record, filled with anxious conversations about obligation.

Due to its bright, open production and quirky presentation, Heart Like a Levee is a watermark for Hiss Golden Messenger. Seldom have hard times sounded this uplifting.

Each of these song conjures the Southeast in some subtle or explicit way, but it’s not the ethos of the Southeast that makes Heart Like a Levee so captivating; it’s Taylor’s vision of it and how he lets it flood out of his music like water bursting through a reinforced dam.

Drowned in Sound

This record—despite its seeming reluctance to yield specifics to the listener—is a very sincere set of Americana numbers, crafted with care and precision, held aloft by the tactful musicianship.

DC Taylor’s sixth album as Hiss Golden Messenger finds him expanding his musical and emotional horizons even further from his country-folk baseline, inspired by a sense of growing conflict between the competing demands of his music and his family.

Worth a listen
A very well-crafted Americana record that is always very pretty, but often transcends the prettiness into something quite engaging and exciting. Hiss Golden Messenger draws heavily from the past and treat their influences with respect, but it's not just a retro record -- they leave their own stamp on these genres. It can drift into the background if you let it, but a careful listen is quite rewarding.
