This boyishness is equally appealing, and those sly shifts in tone are why Mendes comes into his own on Illuminate.
The sparseness of Illuminate suits Mendes, but his voice would probably sound good in most environments. Mendes hasn’t quite been able to capitalize on the pop-star momentum of “Stitches,” and I fear future records will thus take fewer production and songwriting risks. That’s a shame. Mendes, only 18, feels like he’s just getting started.

This doesnt make me gay if I fw a lil bit of Shawn mendes from time to time, right? But seriously this album is solid in a lot of ways. The guitar style songs are good like treat you better. The best track on here is mercy which is an amazing song that makes me feel 2016 vibes again.
