Entertainment Weekly

Sure, Pure + Simple doesn’t have an instant classic like Parton’s 1973 standard “I Will Always Love You.” But it shows that five decades into her career, Parton isn’t a nostalgia act—she’s still one of America’s most vital country songsmiths.

In many respects, this sounds like an album Parton could have made in the mid-'70s, before she made her bid to become a cross-genre superstar, and for fans who want to hear "the Real Dolly," Pure & Simple will hit the spot like a glass of iced tea on August afternoon.

NOW Magazine
At a time when darkness and anxiety permeate our pop music landscape - think Drake, Rihanna and even Justin Bieber's semi-heavy turn on Purpose - Parton's 43rd album is an injection of sunshine.
The Guardian
It’s frustrating: if Parton would just dial down the kitsch a bit more, she’d have a genuinely fantastic album on her hands.
Rolling Stone
Generally tasteful and acoustic, Dolly Parton's 43rd studio album is most effective at its most effortless.

Pure & Simple is at best a middle shelf release in Parton's discography.

'Pure & Simple' resembles a charming traditional sound that's hard to find within mainstream music. Acoustically-driven, but still - somewhat - attempting to fit in like a 'cool mom' ('I'm Sixteen'), Parton's current album shares tales of love and heartbreak and the moral dilemmas that entail. Highlights include the time-stopping, 'Forever Love', the quirky charm of 'Kiss It' and 'Outside Your Door', and the vocally intense, 'Can't Be That Wrong'.
