XXL

Savage Mode, with its use of melody and subtle production, is by far 21’s best mixtape so far.

HipHopDX

With Metro becoming an architect for what’s trending in Hip Hop today matched with 21’s raw rhymes that attract more new listeners, Savage Mode is on course to be one of the best underground releases of 2016.

On Savage Mode, the dry-voiced and deadpan trap rapper 21 Savage recounts a life that has known nothing but violence. It's his strongest release, thanks to sleek production by Metro Boomin.

Exclaim!

While Savage Mode's generally slow pace and no frills structure is true to its Southern roots, the project's sound might be a bit too regional for some. It lacks universal appeal, but there's an authenticity to it that can't be ignored.

This is some pretty solid trap with Metro Boomin's usual great atmosphereic production and 21's dark and mostly-monotoneness. As far as trap goes its darkness and hostility (displayed with 21's violent and fearless lyrics) makes it pretty unique. Interesting listen if you're into the trap sound, underrated imo

Many of these songs come off as safe takes on the mid-2010's trap movement, but that would be selling both 21 Savage and Metro Boomin short. Most of the excellence in this tape does go to the producer Boomin, whose arrangements sound very ambient, almost Boards of Canada-like especially on "Ocean Drive" and at the tail end of "Real Nigga". 21 Savage, meanwhile, spreads his violent gospel through a very mellow, eerily laid-back tone.

I think the way I feel about 21 Savage's Music is the same way I felt about Young Thug's Music early last year. It grew on me and I began to like it. This mixtape is a step in the right direction
