David Bowie's third consecutive UK chart-topper and U.S. Top 5 breakthrough, 1974’s Diamond Dogs is a bummer, a bad trip, "No Fun"–a sustained work of decadence and dread that transforms corrosion into celebration.
Originally conceived as a concept album based on George Orwell's 1984, Diamond Dogs evolved into another one of Bowie's paranoid future nightmares.

Officially, David Bowie is a furry.
After cash grab album, Bowie didn't know were he needs to go. His music adaptation of "1984" didn't get permisson by Orwell's wife, who was holding at that time rights to it. And also he wanted to make "Ziggy Stardust" Musical. But he decided to mix both ideas to be postapocaliptic "Diamond Dogs". Also this album is concept album about apocaliptic world in eyes of Halloween Jack. Concept ... read more

"A musical parody based on the mass death of tens of thousands of people."
- David Bowie, 1974
Onstage, in front of thousands, he leaves his drummer [Mick Woodmansey] and guitarist [Trevor Bolder] unemployed to essentially establish the demise of Ziggy Stardust.
"Not only is it the last show of the tour; but it's the last show we'll ever do."
All that momentum and attention drawn to you couldn't be put to waste, and so he gets bank off that tour and ... read more
While it may not be as adventurous or lyrically captivating as some of his previous projects, it certainly doesn't disappoint. Bowie's vocals on this album are much deeper this time around, giving a darker undertone to the project. And, let me say, are great. The instrumentation in this project is quite lively but is once again quite dark in tone. Basically Diamond Dogs, from what I can gather, is what will carry his glam rock style away, and it does a fantastic job at doing so.

Bowie's most underrated album?
When a plan to adapt George Orwell's "1984" fell through, Bowie turned the leftover tracks into a concept album - and the dour atmosphere really lends itself to the depressing story.
The whole "Sweet Thing" medley is one of the best things Bowie ever did, "Rebel Rebel" is deservedly iconic, and there are so many underrated bangers ("We Are the Dead" / "Big Brother" / "Diamond Dogs").

BOWIE DEEP DIVE #8
This is such a weird fucking album in every possible way. First of all, this is officially the most disgustingly ugly album cover of all time, especially together with the back cover (srsly, do yourself a favour and don't look it up, it'll traumatize you).
Secondly, it kind of opens like a concept album, and it sometimes flirts with the idea of actually being one. But in reality it's more like an album so full of different concepts it's barely held together - in fact it's ... read more
David Bowie (8/25)
Now, I didn't have many expectations with this album but DAMN I was surprised. I guess Pin Ups was a prequel to the sound of this album as Bowie goes full Glam Rock concept album once again. Quite good. Also, I did not rate this 84 because of the 1984 reference.
