The beloved Canadian singer-songwriter's 1975 release marked a turning point for Joni, both musically and lyrically. Although 'Hissing', her most experimental album to date, takes a while to appreciate, it has a highly enjoyable romantic-jazz vibe to it. She also abandoned her personal songwriting and created characters on each song to become a social philosopher. 'Hissing', a timeless classic, fed her legacy and influence, and earned the honour of being Prince and Björk's favourite album.
Although "Hissing" was viewed as a betrayal after the incredibly accessible (by Joni standards) "Court and Spark," time has proven this record has a deserved place in her "golden age" discography. Emotional moments like "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" and "The Boho Dance" are on par with "Down to You" or even "Both Sides Now," while many of her polarizing experiments with synthesizers and sampling (namely "The Jungle ... read more

Living in the same world it tells and dreams itself to be in, "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" marks the turning point in Joni Mitchell's career, letting go of the perfect imperfections of folk and zooming in to the lively, experimental and dense world of jazz, making for a riveting, complex listen.
