BAD PREMONITION sees the artist finally self-determining her destiny, revelling in a style of cerebral 22nd century art-pop that brings to mind Grimes if music was still her primary objective instead of a maligned side quest.
I’ve had my eyes on Tei Shi ever since her feature on Blood Orange’s Negro Swan back in 2018. She’s a great singer, but I’ve yet to hear a project from her that captures her full potential. Bad Premonition is that for the most part. A lot of the R&B and pop cuts here are really sticky. Great vocal melodies, great performances, bright beats, this 6 track EP is a lot of fun.
This project definitely shows some promise for Tei Shi, and this being my first listen of their work I am impressed, her voice is great for this Singer/Songwriter and R&B avenue but there are a couple of weak points. I just feel like the writing itself is a little weak followed by a not so engaging production. However Tei Shi keeps me their with her vocal ability.
