it's a bit disappointing, the snippets and album rollout made me think this album was going to be a lot better than it was. some songs don't really earn there length times (like light shower, battle of the larynx etc) and even though the material is nice, it gets a bit tired after 4+ minutes since there's no developments to the music.
This might grow on me, and I will say this album definitely has some of Melanies best songs, and I think with more time this could end up becoming my favourite ... read more
j*sus i am so nice, bcz this is not her magnum opus to put it lightly. Many ideas are enjoyable, but a lot of executive choices have a hand in making this her most washed out and least artistically successful record. And the worst thing is, that it is not even the music itself that mostly fails, but quite literally the editing of her vocals.
Melanie doesn’t have the most expressive, showstopping voice, so when she adds all the weird filters and vocal distortions to it, it’s left ... read more
the lyricism here is horrendous, and i honestly cannot recall the melody to any of these tracks. this feels super empty.
Melanie martinez making non-pop music exposes all the flaws in her work that are excusable and kind of charming when she's making pop music. This might be the most nothing album I've heard all year, I felt nothing listening to it
I'm sorry it took me nearly a decade to realise that Melanie is mid guys, I can't believe it.
i need more time with PORTALS to declare it as Melanie’s best work, but it definitely has competition with Cry Baby.
i am loving the new and fresh direction Melanie has taken with this album. the new sound incorporated with production reminiscent of K-12 and Cry Baby is amazing. her songwriting and vocal performance has just gotten better and better. the concept is well done in my opinion, too. i think this is the perfect closer to Cry Baby’s journey.
i have been anticipating MM3 ... read more
In general, pretty disappointing. I, like many other people I've seen post about this album, used to really enjoy Melanie when I was younger. I think what drew me into a lot of her early work was that she used this kind of shock value juxtapositioned lyrics with production that doesn't seem to mesh-- but back then it felt like it worked. In fact, I still think Crybaby is a solid album in the areas where it utilizes this tactic to discuss themes of drvgs and familial trauma at a young age. It ... read more
They literally made Bjork for a TikTok here.
Bjork. For a TikTok. Bjork. And TikTok. I can`t believe that I need to combine these two things in one sentence, but...
This is so stupid...
"Look at me, I'm so strange, amorphous and bizarre, although I sound like the most bland copy of Billie Eilish, but you have never seen such visuals before, because you don't know who the hell Björk is and what her last album looked like, so buy my album!"
Portals seems to be Melanie Martinez describing herself going through some sort of rebirth. The result; a mixed bag that is more mediocre than good. The album peaked at the very start and none of the songs after DEATH captured anything that matched the opening track. The slower paced songs reallllly drag on and she also attempts this pop punk style in a few songs that feels like an attempt by Martinez to branch out, but just ends up being kind of bland anyways. I am also not the biggest fan of ... read more
This is the only Melanie's album that I liked completely.
Death, Tunnel Vision, Battle For The Larynx, The Contortionist and Evil are best tracks
ehh.. some of the lyrics are corny tbh. although if the crybaby storyline is continuing this album express it very ambiguously, the production are nice i guess mel knows what she's doing ig? but i still don't like the theme of any songs
“PORTALS” is an album that sadly fails to amount to anything very interesting. While a handful of tracks have some good ideas, nothing really results in a singular song reaching “good” or “great” to me. The album simultaneously feels under and overproduced. Overall it feels like “Melanie” has somewhat downgraded artistically, because at least her earlier albums had a few fun pop leaning tracks. The attempt to build a more alternative and inspired ... read more
I love the album!! I love how she connect her first, second and third album!! What a mastermind artist she is!! It's just that, the faerie soirie is lacking, but it's still good though. I love this album!! 💗
WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU! WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU! >:(
Anyways…
It didn’t live up to the imaginative visuals, or built-up hype. It wasn’t terrible, though. Personal and concerted themes, but no innovative sound to support them. Almost, but not quite.
Best tracks: Evil, Death, & Spider Web
More like Fos-snore-a.
Yeah, that joke's lame, and so is this album. Well, not completely. Conceptually, I totally understand what it's trying to go for in terms of her characters being reborn throughout the Crybaby and PORTALS arcs, but overall it just doesn't wow me or make me interested in the story with music alone. I will start by saying that this album flows extremely well with fluid transitions and a full loop being created with the "Life is death, is life, is..." refrain ... read more
Melanie Martinez drops all the weird childish stuff and instead exchanges it for some of the worst pop vocals I've heard in awhile.
Like, seriously. I just formally reviewed her last two albums to prep myself for new material from her, and the vocals were the HIGHLIGHT of those other projects. Here it's been bastardized by horrible vocal processing and ugly vocoders that just makes every song feel like a chore to get through. It especially sucks because I can tell that there is interesting ... read more
ngl she tricked me w the initial release of DEATH.. i thought that song was mostly amazing and it made me think the whole album was gonna sound like it & well it doesn't, there are great ideas lurking throughout the whole thing but the final result is a disappointing and even several times surprisingly generic collection of (nevertheless) cohesive alt-pop (?) tracks. nothing horrible here though unlike the disaster that was k-12. but this new album might confirm that she may never actually ... read more
