It was with this record that I discovered Tom Waits. For this reason, this review will not be objective at all. Because as I went through the man's discography, I quickly understood that he had already done better before, and that he would do much better after this "Heartattack & Vine".

Tom Waits here slithers his way into an even darker corner of society, taking on a villainous persona who spits venom lyrically and accomplishes this through an even greater exaggeration of his trademark growl. The up-tempo songs, deeply rooted in blues rock largely, are even more raucous than those off of Blue Valentine, and clearly show Waits wanting to break out of his shell.

‘Heartattack and Vine’ serves as a perfect summary of who Tom Waits is as a songwriter. To me, it's his essence: this wounded, romantic bluesman with a heart of gold and a gut full of bourbon who just wants to be with his baby. Going into "Heartattack and Vine" I didn't know what to expect. I had been kind of let down by Waits last two records-"Foreign Affairs" and "Blue Valentine"-and thought that if Waits continued down this stylistic rode, that he would lose me as a listener. However, my fears were quickly put to rest by the start of the title track; a track that perfectly showcases why I love this album so much.
