Darker than Maxinquaye, but only slightly less approachable. There is definitely more of a hip hop flavor to this one, which is not a bad thing. A twisted album, and worthy listening experience.
The tension, deriving from the internal need to escape from his own reflection, sits on top of the record and deliberately pushes for sharper edges.
It’s a beautifully realized album, and one of British hip-hop’s finest moments.
