The Weeknd's follow up to 2015's Beauty Behind the Madness is an improvement; but not very much of one. Most songs are painfully formulaic, with very shallow lyrics and anticlimactic production (aside from the Daft Punk crafted songs). Kendrick Lamar, however, absolutely kills it on his feature, even with Sidewalks being one of the more annoying songs on Starboy. Lana Del Rey does what she does best by not adding anything positive to the album, and Future lightens the mood with his verse on ... read more

Unfortunately, The Weeknd has acquired the qualities of salt in the r'n'b gastronomy: it makes the dishes tastier, but it's bad for health.

This album is what happens when an amazing singer who has one of the most passionate and heaviest r&b discographies out right now tries to create a more radio-friendly sound and persona. Nearly every song here is filler with no personality. The production is fine, but Abel's lyrics are so pointless and delivered in such an emotionally flat way (the exception is the song Die For You, which is my favorite song on the album) it's infuriating. Future's feature is okay, Kendrick's is excellent, ... read more

Okay, this one is a good one.

It's not as good as I thought, though. This is album is huge and I feel like 10 or 12 songs would do it. But it turned out to be okay.
The Weeknd has this "Michael Jackson feel" only he knows how to do it. The downbeats are great and the melodies are not boring anymore. It's a joy.

Unfortunately, the songs look too much alike. There were times a song would end, another one would start and I wouldn't even notice it. Maybe it's because he tried to dare a ... read more

This is what happens when you try to please everyone at the same time- a cheesy, unlikeable mess of an album that only works about half the time. Without the strong leading singles that BBTM had and the mysterious flair that surrounded him in his past work, The Weeknd feels identityless on Starboy. It doesn't help that he tries his absolute hardest to push an unfitting Michael Jackson gimmick, either. Easily his weakest work to date.

Best Songs: Starboy ft. Daft Punk, False Alarm, Sidewalks ft. Kendrick Lamar, I Feel It Coming ft. Daft Punk, Six Feet Under.

The Weeknd here is trying to pull away from his old R&B/pop style and go for more Electro-pop style for more radio friendly hits with the help of Daft Punk. What is the outcome? It's good, just good. False Alarm and Starboy are great hits with I Feel it Coming not that far behind as a good song while Sidewalks steals the show as the best song on the album with the ... read more

I do not know if it's just me, but I find it extremely difficult to concentrate on listening to an entire LP of The Weeknd. What I realize is that the albums are a lot of the same, however, what in Beauty Behind The Madness was boring, in Starboy it was certainly more loose and fun. There are some great tracks such as Secrets and Six Feet Under. However, for having 18 songs, many of them seem to be on the album just as filler.

There are a few great tracks on here but the rest is just absolute boring filler. The only tracks you need to listen to are Starboy, I Feel It Coming, and Sidewalks.

PS: I actually like False Alarm???

Abel returns with a suddenly more colorful, less somber work, despite still hitting basically the same lines and notes he's used to. On Starboy, the modern pop prince gathers with some of his newly acquired friends for a much more accessible collection of tracks that go from the futuristic electronic beats provided by Daft Punk to the club-oriented conventions that somehow, sound very much self-imposed. Since his previous albums, he's made it clear what his intentions were, and Starboy only ... read more

The most entertaining eleven-track R&B album of the decade is hiding in here. Despite there being 6-8 filler tracks, I'm such a sucker for the rest of it that I just have to give it a good score.

The Weeknd strays a way from his comfort zone on Starboy which is seen very much as he is not sure on this album what he is trying to achieve. The project slowly descends into abyss with every next track getting more predictable. Best performances can be seen on the first songs. Starboy feels even worse when you realise that the whole album is made around the song StarBoy.

Slightly more adventurous sound-wise versus Beauty Behind the Madness, but still about the same stuff. Still don't really find it compelling.

Well, I decided to re-listen to 'Starboy' for it's 2nd anniversary, and I still think it's overrated. Abel went from his greatly executed alternative R&B style to straight pop/hip-hop with an R&B core. I honestly don't understand why he made this change. He had already established a sound that Everyone recognized him for, and he had already received acclaim for his previous works.

What this LP ended up being, is a substantially mediocre mix of genre's and styles done in a way that's ... read more

Wrong way, Abel.

Apparently the term Starboy is a Jamaican term that describes someone at the height of their life or career. If that’s true for The Weeknd, I can’t imagine what garbage the future holds. This album is a lengthy undertaking of bland dance pop that reflects all of the biggest flaws he’s created for himself as an artist that, had I first discovered him in 2011 or 2013, would’ve never expected him to be overcome by.

All of his cringiest and most laughable ... read more

Aside from some standout tracks worthy of being singles, Starboy can be described as a mess of an album that doesn`t know what it`s doing because it has trapped itself into a safe-space of musical ideas. Rather than putting some strong performances to the test, Starboy feels trapped within its own boundaries and the guest features don`t always seem to help this record either. There are great Weeknd songs, but they would function much better as singles rather than in context with this LP.

Not a creative risk but still a masterpiece from Abel. He shows us his pop side and his darker cuts as well. In a whole the album is worthwhile to listen to.

Abel’s voice is great and the production is solid. But “Starboy” lacks cohesion and it still never changed much from his usual songwriting formula.

I forgot to rate this when it came out lol
well, there's a handful of pretty great songs here (the daft punk tracks in particular), but I feel like there's more filler than usual for a weeknd album.
it's still an ok listen, nothing too bad.

The Weeknd just seems to be, as he did with his last album, making pop concessions without pushing the RnB sound and penning druggy and dark lyrics like he did in his mixtapes. The album is full of filler songs that have really only good hooks and the actual features on this album add practically nothing, bar Kendrick on Sidewalks and the Daft Punk production. I understand he has left his old sound behind, but in doing so I feel he has also abandoned the artistry and vision we had seen ... read more

Great sogs, great production and nice concept. Another side of The Weeknd. Its a little travel back to the 80s, the production of this album is just beyond words, Daft Punk made a good work with this album. The album is the type that you can listening till the end and no need skip any song

Strongest: Secreats, Sidewalks, A Lonely Night, Starboy, Love To Lay
Weakest: Attention, Stargirl (Interlude)

Unfortunately this is a huge decline in quality from his prior releases. The only tracks with any redeeming value are the Daft Punk collaborations and possibly Party Monster.

The more I listened to this, the more I liked it, except for the 6-7 tracks that I don't ever see growing on me. From more R&B than pop on his previous album, Starboy is pretty much pop all over, with R&B elements here and there. His lyrics and hooks have gone "commercial," as some people call it, but he makes it work and sound good, which is all that matters to me. Although I do kinda miss him constantly talking about wild nights and drugs like on Trilogy. Honestly, if he ... read more
