CRITIC REVIEWS

Albumism

It’s safe to assume that Gregory and Goldfrapp will reteam someday. In the meantime, we’re fortunate to have Goldfrapp on her own, standing tall, as she actions an engaging, contemporary pop genre experience with The Love Invention.

90
Clash
Welcome to Alison Goldfrapp’s paradisiacal, tempting, thrilling vision of the sublime.
80
Mojo

Apart from the more lightweight yarning of In Electric Blue, each track on this album takes you further into her brave new world.

80
Evening Standard

It may be a minor name change but it’s an entirely fresh start.

80
The Telegraph

A musician accustomed to years of being called strange by critics and audiences who were intimidated by her aloof, genderless persona, Goldfrapp’s arrival as a solo artist marks a new dawn for her career.

80
Exclaim!

On The Love Invention, Alison Goldfrapp shows that she's more than just the face of Goldfrapp.

80
DIY
It runs the gamut of immediate, dancefloor-ready electro-pop with style.
80
AllMusic
Her respect for the power of the groove results in one of her most cohesive projects, and one that makes the dance floor that much classier with its presence.
80
musicOMH

The artist formerly known as half of Goldfrapp deploys powerful creative forces for a louche debut solo record whose modus operandi is essentially ‘poppers o’clock’.

77
Spectrum Culture

Hitting the dancefloor, Goldfrapp proves that age is just a construct people use to limit possibilities.

70
Slant Magazine

It’s when the singer embraces her inner weirdo that her music feels truly inventive.

70
Uncut

She relies on relative conservative house music tropes sometimes, but the hooks never fail to cut through.

70
Northern Transmissions

In its cohesion, the record becomes too homogenous to pick out actual highlights, and the result is a blend of electronic music. More of an album to be used as background noise when working, The Love Invention isn’t a definitive statement on who Alison Goldfrapp is, but it’s a nice time when it’s on.

70
The Line of Best Fit

The Love Invention isn’t quite the crown grab it has the potential to be, despite her being on brilliant form as always.

68
Pitchfork
Not quite a reinvention, the Goldfrapp singer’s solo debut sets her against sleek synth disco that she mostly complements rather than commands.
60
The Observer
The Goldfrapp frontwoman’s solo debut aims squarely at the dancefloor yet is somehow lacking in wow factor.
60
The Irish Times

While there are plenty of glittering numbers on this very decent album, it mostly whets the appetite for what Goldfrapp the duo might come up with next.

Instrumentals are predictable and uneventful but the biggest crime is the vocals sound ‘airbrushed’ and one note.

Pleasant enough background fodder, though I’m still surprised at the lack of personality here.

Not only is the album itself bloated, but the songs are bloated too, so a lot of fun ideas instead turned into a slog of an album.

It's honestly amazing how much people hate this album. The Love Invention is a more digestible version of Róisín Murphy's work, but that doesn't make this album any less gratifying. "NeverStop" is one of the best disco tunes in recent memory, and the first half of this album is just bop after bop after bop. There are certainly some filler and generic songs on this album, but this album overall feels like a bright addition to its genre instead of a derivative one.

Glossy electro-pop will always be easy listening for me. The clear highlight from this mixed bag of bangers and misses would be, for me, Digging Deeper Now. The combination of the various refrains sprinkled throughout culminates in a gorgeous final chorus, and the pounding beat makes it so easily danceable. Thankfully, the low points aren’t too low, like with SLoFLo, which just suffers from being boring. At no point is the production not pristine and polished. Together with the ... read more

This could have been pretty damn cool, you know. Over the past year or so, I've been going through the total works of one Alison Goldfrapp from around 1999 to 2023. As with these kinds of things, unless you're really, REALLY into the artist, you'll have some highs and lows all the way through. For every Seventh Tree or even Felt Mountain (my current favourite album), you get something a bit more uninteresting like Silver Eye or, in fact, The Love Invention.

In a word, it's safe. Too safe and ... read more
