AllMusic

It's not that Lavigne hasn't matured, but it's that her talents are better suited on music that's a little less contemplative and deliberate than Under My Skin.

Q Magazine
An altogether more satisfying supply of air punching, stadium sized choruses.

Entertainment Weekly
As contrived as the results can be, there's no denying the level of craft at work.
70
Rolling Stone

Lavigne doesn’t incorporate any new ideas on Skin; instead, she shines up her old ones, often multitracking her voice to make sure you don’t miss the mile-wide choruses.

60
NOW Magazine
Bubble-gum pop it ain't, but Avril's real appeal is in translating teen angst into believably insipid lyrics – the ones here are charmingly raw.
50
Slant Magazine
While the hooks here are undeniable, Avril’s lyrics are often vague or archetypical.

DIY

As an album it's just too inconsistent to jump up to the next level.

The Guardian
Lavigne certainly has the vocal equipment to cope, simpering dejectedly at the outset and belting it out at the climax, but it is hard to muster much excitement.

Avril Lavigne’s sophomore album 'Under My Skin' was everything I wanted her debut album to be. In addition to my favorite Avril song, “Nobody’s Home” being on this album, the album contains tons of that perfect Avril Lavigne punk rock that we all know and love. The album is more mature, edgy, and overall just better than “Let Go”. I was definitely not let down.
