Thanks to @NICK for recommending this to me. I'm slightly late to the party on this but I'm finally here, and it fucking rules!!

Knockarea is the debut EP from Manchester-based punk rock 4 piece band Maruja.

I've been hearing about this thanks to constant word of mouth on AOTY and all the praise it got since its release in March. So of course, I was quite excited to see what these guys had to offer.

Let's start off with saying how fucking cool that artwork is, looking like something from a ... read more

'Knocknarea' is my introduction to the visceral post-rock sounds of UK underground act Maruja, and boy is it something special. This is a gritty and atmospheric EP from the band that is incredibly cinematic. Each track has perfect pacing and is excellent at building suspense, anxiety, and tension, before releasing into a cathartic and beautiful climax. Holy shit! Dudes are evolving! Two years after their last single, Rage, which was awesome, Maruja released their EP, Knocknarea. It’s a collection of four singles that they had gradually released beforehand. And my gosh, all of them are so good! In this EP, Maruja keeps up their jazzy punk/post-hardcore vibe, and adds some ominous post-rock sounds to it. As you may have guessed, yes, it’s ... read more

A Punk-Jazz Fusion, "Knocknarea" shows just how truly fluid Jazz is as a genre. Maruja meshes these two genres together beautifully creating an EP that stands out from a lot other stuff made in 2023. from the sounds of the sax to the eerie strings of the guitar at times, this EP maintains its Punk feel while having a jazzy flair. A good recommendation for anyone trying to dabble in new and different types of genre-bending music.
