The Arts Desk

Remarkable, uncategorisable seventh album from the US composer and singer.

90
AllMusic

Whether it's with the themes of romantic heartbreak and bodily autonomy, or the global boundary-pushing musicality at play on Mélusine, Salvant's work is transcendent.

Spectrum Culture

Mélusine shows us the singer’s heart, and we can only look at it and be amazed by its workings.

Mojo

Melusine retains the intellectual curiosity of Salvant's jittery, questing catalogue.

Louder Than War

Mélusine is a remarkable album; one that brings together latter-day compositions with songs collated from over several centuries. Despite that diversity, it works perfectly, primarily because Salvant, respectfully, transforms the older material into something that is unmistakably her own and undeniably modern.

Just wow! This thing IS art. Probably will be my jazz record of the year. Super dainty yet powerful.

American jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant provides with her seventh album fourteen songs, chiefly sung in French and Creole. Her wonderful voice combined with the slick performance of the musicians creates a worth hearing result of three quarters contemporary vocal jazz. I struggle to really connect with this one, but it was sonically pleasant.

I think I might have a thing for singing in French. Anyway, I like how this album combines jazz with French chanson, Afrobeat and electronic music influences.

Stunning fluid and varied vocal jazz. It feels very modern due to it's well varied instrumental palette. This means it can branch out into fun and interesting styles (Just voice and drums, quirky electronics, etc.). I love the smoothness of the album. This is emphasised by the singer's soft and emotional voice. The album is very good at setting a chilled out mood. I particularly enjoyed 'La route enchantée' and 'Petite musique terrienne'.
