CRITIC REVIEWS

90
PopMatters

Alicia Keys decided to make something so raw, so honest, so palpable, that it should be all but impossible for soul music lovers to ignore this release.

83
Entertainment Weekly

The combination of her subject matter and her urgent delivery makes Here her most vital release in years.

82
HipHopDX

Peppered with anecdotal interludes she does with her friends, HERE is sewn up together nicely and a testament to what Keys always gets right – speaking from the heart as she strokes those 88-keys.

80
The Guardian

Despite an undertow of glum earnestness, Keys has never sounded so committed.

80
NME

With ‘Here’, it feels as though she’s dug deep to produce a set of genuine, heartfelt and relevant anthems.

70
Rolling Stone

She roughs up the piano she once played prettily, endows her vocal exertions with more church than ever, and leans into a solid old-school hip-hop backbone fortified in large part by her husband Swizz Beatz.

70
Slant Magazine

Alicia Keys seems more awake and relaxed than ever on her first album in four years.

Exclaim!

Here is empowering at times — it's strong in craft and intent, and will likely perform well — but the hope that Keys will deliver that iconic, instant classic album continues on.

67
Consequence of Sound

Here doesn’t struggle to balance this range of topics. Keys sings with authenticity and passion, occasionally delving into frustration, which keeps everything connected. What Here does struggle with is an unfinished commitment to order.

65
Pitchfork

The rhythms on HERE represent a departure from her previous efforts and indicate a willingness to experiment with her sound but the lyrics, which rarely betray a sense of adventure, cancel out most of this good work.

60
Clash

‘Here’ lacks the radical arrogance of Kanye, the lyrical dexterity of Kendrick, the aesthetic of Solange, and authority of A Tribe Called Quest.

50
AllMusic

At points, Keys' invigorated energy level and need to simply expel ideas, rather than refine them, lends the album a hollow quality.

On her new record, singer/songwriter Alicia Keys surges somehow renewed, refreshed and a bit more creative than usual. On HERE, the artist delivers some of her finest songs in years, also striking with a considerably cohesive and sharp tracklisting that follows the soulful/socially-conscious concept pretty well. This album is also probably the one with her best, most developed instrumentals yet (at least for the first half), with a select group of producers complimenting her soothing voice and ... read more

i dunno, it just seems like where beyonce goes, everyone else follows. of course alicia keys has her own style, and she sounds a lot different than both beyonce and solange, and her musical talent is arguably better, but ultimately the messages of this album are less poetic and more juvenile and confused than its predecessors.

In the intro Keys pays spoken word tribute to that the sounds of old school hiphop and jazz legends like Nina Simone only to do a 180 degree turn in the first track and explore modern alternative dance sounds. This album is varied and nuanced and at times reminiscent of Lauryn Hill's solo efforts. Alicia talent both as a musician and songwriter is consistent and this album is a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end.
