Behind the kple kple mask from Ivory Coast lies Herbie Hanckock's quest for the ideal jazz-funk environment. So, he gathers the rest of the Headhunters, avoids strict experimentation and, all together, set sail for the land beyond the obvious.

This is the epitome of jazz fusion. The bass riffs are infectious and a standout point of the record, and the accumulation of various instruments together creating this groovy 70's essential is mindblowing. The climaxes are above and beyond what I had expected, steadily building into absolute mayhem of jazz and funk colliding into a clash of traditional jazz and progression of the genre.

A classic album sleeve, does the music contained within grab me?

Well, this album sure is smooth - cocktail lounge smooth. Obviously there's a little more going on than that but the problem is in terms of the overall atmosphere and aesthetic this just isn't what I'm majorly attracted to.

If I walked in somewhere and they're playing this, perfect. Would I choose to spin this myself? Probably not too often. The second track, with more world influences, was my favourite.
