I'm surprised these guys aren't more popular. This is good southern rock. A few points off because there's not much new going on here. It's a sound that's been done before. But all the songs are written and executed well. Overall a solid album.
Moving from southern boogie to blues rock and then to country rock, while the sign says: back to the past!
Do we have to follow it?
Blackberry Smoke are a cool and interesting Southern rock band -- a concept I thought got left behind about thirty years ago. When they're good, they channel Lynyrd Skynyrd, but at their best, they transcend this comparison and achieve some songs with a certain timeless appeal. Lyrics take a bit of backseat to sound and vibe, which works alternately for and against the band depending on the strength of the melodies.
