The Shouting Matches seem to have no actual agenda other than spending the afternoon in the basement playing as loud as possible and then remembering to clear off the cans of beer from the tops of their amps before packing them in the van for the gig later.

Anyone approaching Grownass Man as a serious artistic statement on par with Bon Iver is bound to be disappointed; to the contrary, the album’s loose, lay-about approach offers an appealing contrast to Vernon’s fussed-over output with his primary band.

Consequence of Sound

Grownass Man is nothing new or nothing too special. It’s a group of tight, talented musicians doing justice to sounds and styles that they may otherwise avoid.
