AllMusic
Certainly, there's some calculation behind the entire thing, but what matters is the end result, one of the great dance-pop albums, a record that demonstrates Madonna's true skills as a songwriter, record-maker, provocateur, and entertainer through its wide reach, accomplishment, and sheer sense of fun.

Entertainment Weekly
Though a bit diffuse, Madonna’s third project finds her adding to her palette with Spanish pop (”La Isla Bonita”) and messing with our heads with its seeming anti-abortion song (”Papa Don’t Preach”). Also notable for "Live to Tell,” her best ballad to date.

Slant Magazine

Time stamped with '80s-era keyboard and drum synths, True Blue, though chockfull of hits, is the most dated of Madonna's albums.

Catchy, fun and danceable at times, but virtually every song has a bit of tedium mixed in and could stand at being 45 seconds shorter.
Jimmy Jimmy is the one exception, which is by far my favourite track on this album.

I've been slacking on releasing ratings lately, a mix between anxiety and OCD is to blame-- but I'm hoping starting today to knock one out per day until June 3rd.

It is unabashedly fun dance music that doesn't take anything too seriously. While it doesn't have the megahits such as 'Like a Virgin' or 'Material Girl,' True Blue has the best tracklist of her first three albums. There is not a dull second on this album, and contains some of my favorite 80s Madonna songs like 'Papa Don't Preach,' 'Where's the Party,' and the infectious 'Open Your Heart.' Every song is good; it is one of Madonna's strongest records from start to finish.

It is really surprising that this woman always has the best albums in her long and successful career. "True Blue" is another of the countless perfect LP's of Madonna's career
