If Black complexity had been the meta-message lost in De La’s big crossover, abstraction, abjection, and humor were the winning trifecta of 3 Feet High and Rising.
The most inventive, assured, and playful debut in hip-hop history, 3 Feet High and Rising not only proved that rappers didn't have to talk about the streets to succeed, but also expanded the palette of sampling material with a kaleidoscope of sounds and references culled from pop, soul, disco, and even country music.
One of the most original rap records ever to come down the pike, the inventive, playful 3 Feet High and Rising stands staid rap conventions on their def ear.
Eye Know was sent to me on my stream. I loved it. One of the Most feel good songs I have ever heard.
I checked out the album with that track in mind for the experience. What I got was pretty much more or less what I expected, with twists that I was baffled by. Tons of goofy skits, incredibly creative sampling on every song, clean flows and cerebral lyrics. An intense flowery vibe for over an hour, embodying everything that makes 80s hip hop worth listening to.

Well, well, well. De La Soul owns the masters to their first four albums, after years of tooth-and-nail battles with their record label. Once and for all, Plug One has finally overcome the obnoxious roadblock that has been hamstringing them for years. One last time from everybody, even you all in the back, I wanna hear it as loud and proud as you can make it:
TOMMY AIN'T MY MOTHERFUCKING BOY
Now, that's the good news. The bad news: this long, winding battle to push past their record label? ... read more
RIP Trugoy.
Bro fought with tooth and nail to get this shit on streaming, and died before he could see the day it happens. Fucked up beyond belief. Fly high man, I hope there’s daisy’s up in heaven, brother!! 🫡 💐💐💐
“3 Feet High And Rising” is a supremely fun album. I had the time of my life listening to some of these songs! The general vibe of this album is so goofy, but in a way that just feels so earnest and charming in ways only an album of this era could ... read more
I unironically likes De La Orgee lmao
Best song: Me Myself and I
Worst song: Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin's Revenge)
Really good and influential album that still holds up today. Love the first half of this album. Don't think there is a single song I dislike from that section. The second half starts to lose me a bit but brings it back at the end.
