CRITIC REVIEWS

AllMusic

Foxhole is the kind of record that spreads out of the speakers like a warm wave of melancholy. The hushed voices, sweetly sung harmonies, quietly interlocking guitars, and gently rollicking tempos never break the quietly sad mood as song after song hits the sweet spot of midtempo beauty.

The Ornaments are yet another in a long line of floppy-haired guitar bands flying the flag of a purer pop past, but they’re also, unmistakably, one of the better, least pretentious ones. Sometimes it pays to be grateful rather than cynical.

The Line of Best Fit
When it's all done, you can hear that this is a good band, doing some good things but I wonder if with more focus or investment it might bear greater results.

Drowned in Sound

With Foxhole, The Proper Ornaments often make going through the motions sound like some revelatory train of thought.

It’s tough to spot much progress on Foxhole when compared to Wooden Head. In fact, it’s more devolution than evolution but the simple sparseness works well in moderation for some well penned songs.

God Is in the TV

Foxhole is unlikely to blow anybody away, but then, I suspect it was never meant to. This is merely an agreeable set of toe tappers likely to find favour with fans of bands like Real Estate.

Proper Ornaments have continued to explore psychedelic influence, combining contemporaries like Woods and EZTV with “classic-psych” cornerstones The Byrds and Velvet Underground.

The Proper Ornaments must have time-traveled from the 60's-70's psych pop scene, because they perfectly encapsulate the beginnings of that sound. However, "Foxhole" is an album that urges little remembrance from the listener. It'll seduce you into a dream-like state, and then--like your dreams--be forgotten the following day.

Notable Songs: "Cremated (Blown Away)"; "1969"
