And if their world revolves around them and their paranoia, it’s because they’ve constructed it to do just that. Like the art of the insane, every possible space is covered in scrawl and cymbals: guitars, percussion, electronic squall, subhuman screaming, Ross Robinson’s production ensuring the music lets no light in, that you can never quite see round the edges.

With Iowa, Slipknot go to the head of the slag heap, the new kings of extreme. They may wear clown masks, but they're no bozos.

So after all is said and done and the hype has settled we are left with a very good release from an exceptional band. ‘Iowa’ is everything that could be expected from the band and a whole handful more. Prepare for the explosion all over again.

AllMusic

Though not quite as commercially viable as the more straightforward Slipknot album, Iowa is a more interesting listen, one that envelopes you in its American Gothic shadow and leaves you feeling unsettled afterward.

It’s an almost unrelentingly brutal disc that, like so much of the nü metal, often seems like a parody of itself. Slipknot’s shtick is to posit themselves as the most violent, depraved, angst-ridden young malcontents on the block — the sickest of the sick.

Their actual sound is so far down their list of priorities that there is little point in them making records. Slipknot are on a mission to shock: in fairness, they succeed admirably, if only in being shockingly dull. Their percussive thrash metal half-heartedly evokes Sepultura at their most upset with Slayer's adrenaline rush.

-THE NU METAL CHALLENGE- PART 14/25

THE GRAND RETURN (?)

Some time has passed since the last review in this challenge, but we are back! I have no idea for how long but we will try our best to actually finish this, I have no idea how long it's going to take but we’ll see. The show must go on, am I right?

A nu-metal classic.

I've been familiar with Slipknot for quite a while now, when I started listening to old rock and metal 2 years ago a classmate introduced me to them. At first, I ... read more

Wow ladies and gentlemen, we did it. I gave a second nu metal album a positive score. I can now have my metalhead title revokes and be drawn and quartered like the loser I am.

THE NU METAL CHALLENGE PART 14/25

We haven't been defeated by nu-metal just yet - the show must go on!

The third album that's managed to land in the green in this series... honestly isn't a polarizing one.

Slipknot have an image that precedes them: living breathing gimmicks. They're basically sweaty white guys in costumes that have barely more impact on their edginess than Jared Leto's joker. But, unlike Jared Leto, they at least have musical talent to make up for the really shitty look ... read more

An absolutely brutal follow up from their self titled debut. Non stop anger throughout the whole record, great music for the gym! Favorite track is definitely left behind. My plague is a close second.

This album is pure hatred and unbridled rage incarnate, as well as having an absolute nightmare fuel ending.

Undeniably heavier and much more depraved than their debut, but contains a few more faults in elements and whole tracks that just don’t hit me like the debut does. Regardless, a great alternative metal album.
