There’s so much going on throughout ‘Vol 3’, so many ideas, so much to hear, that it takes several listens to fully take in. On the first listen it feels fractured and unfocused; on the second it sounds like the metal album of the year.

AllMusic

Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses doesn't feel like Slipknot's final statement. It's a satisfying, carefully crafted representation of their career to date. But there's a sense that whatever Slipknot do next might be their ultimate broadcast to the faithful.

The Observer

A subtler, more melodic third outing.

Spin

Three years after loosing a river of toxic speed metal on 2001's Iowa, Slipknot are back, this time with tunes closer in spirit to the modern rock of their 1999 debut.

Rolling Stone

Produced by Rick Rubin, Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) experiments with even newer extremes, which in Slipknot's case means tunefulness and traditional song structures.

Producer Rick Rubin often gets a good sound for them, but he can't do anything about the occasional synth element that sucks mad balls, rapping that makes Kid Rock sound like Skillz, and shoddy quiet/loud-intensity sessions that have been firmly co-opted by Christian nu-metal.

I push my fingers into my Eyesssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!

10 year old me love that shit and 20 year old me stills loves this shit. Although, the cleaner production removes the heavy grittiness which i adore from their previous 2 attempts. Vol. 3 is still a very good collection of tracks with some highlights (Either if some of them are overplayed, looking at you Duality. The aggression and energy is still there for a straight fun record for banging your head on your desk and I would say another ... read more

this album confuses me
like slipknot goes with a more melodic voice and the screams arent that brutal but the instrumentals go to more extreme kinds of metal like even sometimes reminds of grindcore

The last great slipknot album (before they just kept trying to make this album over and over again).
Yeah this is where they jump the shark.
