Dirty Mind is the album where Prince became Prince, the artist who lived by his own rules and crossed the line more than once. Like its birthday twin, Remain in Light, Dirty Mind draws from various genres. The opening track's synth bass and keyboard riff is a far cry from the previous disco-heavy albums, but they're not even an indication of the album's sound. I have genuine concern about how catchy Prince is able to make the topic of incest on this album.
Number 3 in my book of the greatest Prince records.

A major change to his second record. Prince wiped out the disco elements to replace them with a cooler and more focused production. The funk became more artificial almost stripped down to the necessary skeleton with more synthesizers involved. His songwriting is exceptionally good almost like a zen-like concentrating on only the most basic moves necessary to support the feelings and ideas behind each composition. Prince deeply stepped out on Dirty Mind in a way that made about the boldest artistic statement he could. Much of his sound remained intact from the previous record, only more fearless in his expression of both musical adventurousness and lyrical quality. His sound is still undeniably rooted in pop, but much like his self-titled release is so rich in its sonic experimentation, from funk to soul and beyond.
