It ranks as arguably Mingus' most joyously swinging outing.

With 'Blues & Roots', Mingus creates a record that comes together incredibly well in pretty much every aspect necessary to make a Jazz record great. The album comes at you with mesmerising feel and energy and an effortless precision that is presented to you in an array of incredible compositions that are equally as avant-garde and complex as they are fun and exciting, all of this is obviously spearheaded by Charlie's driving and powerful bass work, which is, in my opinion, stronger on this ... read more

The History of the Albums - n° 135

[I invite you to read my previous work on the album Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus, in order to better understand his life and the context]. If you are a fan of Jazz or Charles Mingus, you probably know Mingus Ah Um, one of the greatest jazz classics of all time, released in 1959. Well, this masterpiece can also be considered as a kind of "prototype", recorded before but released after in 1960, although this term is very pejorative given the ... read more

'Blues & Roots' as of right now is my favourite Charles Mingus album. The pure excitement and charisma this record oozes is intoxicating to say the least and the musicianship is incredible on here, the energetic, wild and off the wall nature of the record is just on a whole other level of great and as a result it truly stands out to me as an incredible and outstanding jazz record.

WOW FUCK OK. My only experience with mingus before this was his '63 classic the black saint and the sinner lady and this statement may age poorly but MAN this is leagues ahead. This is top 3 jazz i've ever heard-im thinkin. Mingus has such a unique yet compelling style with these chaotic, breakneck pace songs with every instrument being super heavy and deep making these some of the funnest jazz songs I've ever heard. Songs like moanin' and E's flat Ah's flat too are songs that despite thier ... read more

When I first reviewed this album I had practically no experience with jazz music. I think this fact and also my bias towards older music led to me rating a few projects too high. This wasn't one of them though. Coming back to this project led to nothing but banger after banger. Every song on this album hits in its own way, and it's definitely a great representation of Mingus' skill and style.
