Charles Mingus. Charles fucking Mingus. He leads, he succeeds. What a great direction. Attempting the transcendental in fusing jazz and classical together. At the same time laying out an encompassing portfolio of best-kept-secret material. I've never witnessed this level of experimentation in any other big band - the orthodoxy in one's raised-from-jazz canon wouldn't allow it. I hear a mature Mingus at peace with himself. I might be tripping but I find this delightful from beginning to end, a balanced mix of big band wonders and experimental atmospheres.
