It’s not just the chaotic liberation of the Sunshine State the 14 tracks revel in, it’s the heartbreak, addiction and disarray that trailed behind his time there.
This album is really frustrating because a lot of the songs have great ideas that are instantly shat on by either strange production choices, corny lyrics, or just how generic and boring everything else is. There’s only a few tracks that take these ideas and build upon them with little compromise. Although it’s a big improvement from his debut, Sunburn is still Dominic Fike making a batch of by-the-numbers alt pop songs. Sure it’s not terrible, but it’s bland and unoriginal. I’ve heard these songs many times before.
