CRITIC REVIEWS

Pitchfork

Prince’s singular vision and willingness to indulge his curiosities just enough created an apocalypse-anticipating album that, perhaps paradoxically, was built to last for decades and even centuries to come.

AllMusic

Sure, Prince stretches out a bit too much over the course of 1999, but the result is a stunning display of raw talent, not wallowing indulgence.

Slant Magazine

Multi-platinum success, universal critical and commercial adulation, a newfound thematic direction—with 1999, the bar for ’80s funk had been raised, and it still remains Prince’s most engorged musical erection.

The Guardian
Bold double album on which Prince and his Revolution fully embrace synthesizers, while making a blatant grab for pop glory.

Entertainment Weekly
Excessive at times, but not even Prince could avoid the traps inherent in a two-record set.

The two sides of 1999, despite their huge similarity, are perfect examples of the two ways in which to digest Prince's music, and the two ways in which his music is meant to be taken.

Just as Prince must face the contradiction of creating music that gracefully dissolves racial and stylistic boundaries yet fits comfortably into no one's playlist, he must also decide whether he can "dance my life away" when everybody has a bomb. All you need is love?

HE PREDICTED MATRIX!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
This album make Young Prince, household name. There are some of the best hits from early 80's. "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" amazing songs. Opener sets the mood to dance till the end of the world and next songs is greatest song about one night stand. Other songs are about sex, but what makes Prince much more interesting is his more explicit work than rest of artist at that time. As in his songs there are said explicitly sex stuff, sex ... read more

This album is easily more the kind of stuff I heavily like from Prince. All the synthetic drums that I was having issues with on Sign O The Times, doesn't bug me here because the drums help build to the atmosphere instead of clash.

And all the long songs don't drag. I mean it's not how it was in albums like "Songs in the Key of Life" where some songs just have a repeated ending that somehow made the songs more potent when it kept looping, but the songs here don't drag at all.
