At the ripe age of 14, Mark's interest in music began to skyrocket after discovering an almost mythical collective of indie artists known as the Elephant 6 club. Among the most popular artists in the club was Deerhunter. Following on pretty much immediately after Microcastle, this album showcases the band at their creative peak once again. Taking on more folky and country tinged instrumentation combined with some strange ambient soundscapes, this really is Deerhunters "Weirdest" album, as illustrated by the album title. But weird doesn't necessarily mean bad, in fact in this case, this means incredibly diverse and enthralling and one of their best.

Deerhunter release another highly praised album that overall sounds much more like a sparse collection of weird, experimental passages that do have some otherwordly-edge and sound quality to them, but that don't really standout on their own, making it all feel like some occasional experiments that would fit well on some bonus material or B-sides from the band rather on an entire album. In the end, Weird Era Cont. just sounds like a messy exercise in oddities from the group.
Released alongside "Microcastle," "Weird Era Etc." is the more abrasive, unconventional side of the band. While Deerhunter's albums mostly have a specific style and tone, "Weird Era Etc." seems like all the bits made for "Microcastle" that just didn't quite fit. There's nothing wrong with that, but this does end up feeling like a long collection of interesting B-sides.
