Whatever this album may or may not reveal about the real Blake Mills, he’s evidently a person who cares deeply – even obsessively – about his chosen artform, and its ability to delight, console and transform. Jelly Road regularly does all three.
If the last Blake Mills album ‘Mutable Set’ was somewhat evasive and hard to get a precise handle on then ‘Jelly Road’ is even more so. In many ways Mills reminds me of Cass McCombs; both started out as alt country and then moved towards a faintly retro and sometimes psychedelic sound that’s hard to pigeonhole. Similar unhurried and ‘foggy’ arrangements abound, usually matched with cryptic and unconventional lyrics.

On Jelly Road, the latest album from producer/songwriter Blake Mills, he works with various collaborators to infuse sporadic jazz detours into his gentle folk, which ultimately make these songs stand out from the usual music in this style. 'Jelly Road" is my introduction to Blake Mills, it's not particularly an album that I come back to too much, but it was definitely a special experience hearing it for the first time.
