Taylor's sense of wounded hopelessness ... struck a chord with music fans, especially because of its attractive mixture of folk, country, gospel, and blues elements, all of them carefully understated and distanced.

This is a hard album to argue with; it does a good job of proving that his first effort was no fluke. This one gets off the ground just as nicely, as Taylor seems to have found the ideal musical vehicle to say what he has to say.

Let me preface this with I am a bug fan of James Taylor and his music and influence. That being said this album for me wasn't everything I had expectations of. Obviously the hit track "Fire & Rain" elicits such raw and powerful emotion with its lyricism and its simple chords. But some of the other tracks were less profound and thought provoking. A soft rock, with element of folk and pop album; James Taylor's second album is great album. I have only heard of Jame Taylor and never really listened to him but I am highly satisfied with this album. It is not something, I would actively seek out but happy to have a great collection of songs into my playlists.

Even though he would make only one more good album after this, the quality of the melodies and of the music on this album make it one of the top singer-songwriter albums ever. And one of the most enjoyable.

James was blessed with a nice voice and a peaceful sound but the album as a whole doesn't do much to excite me. I can understand the allure of his calm demeanor but all emotions feel glossed over to me. Fire and Rain is very good though, but I hoped to find more gems and was disappointed.

I was worried going into this album, which was recommended to me by a friend, as a result of my clouded perception. Originally, I thought this album was largely going to be a country record; a genre which is easily one of my least favorite. However, I was genuinely surprised to find that the album leaned much more into the folk rock area of things musically (although there were a few country influences as well). For the most part, I found many of the songs on the album very pleasing; many of ... read more
