Wasn’t this at like 84 when fantano dropped his review? His influence on this website is obviously really huge, and it didn’t really hit me until I saw that Jeff rosenstock album get boosted into a must hear. I don’t think it’s some terrible big bad monster, but it is a little silly when I think about it.
its reasons like these i stopped caring about ratings. i like what i like! how opinions influence well anyone really is super wacky. nuts to the rules!!!
What makes people think this is jazz to begin with? Treat it like an indie pop record and you'll have a better time listening to this. Jazz is an elite genre which only 1% of the world's population understand it and have the authority to have any opinion about it. When I listened to this, I never thought Laufey was trying to cosplay Ella Fitzgerald. That knowledge came to me after going to AOTY
As I spend more time listening to her music, it becomes more apparent how her style gets thinner. Her lyrics ended up being more cliche and the sounds get more played out. I'll keep my good rating, but the cliche elements get tiring very quickly for me.
when criticising this record i feel like we have to be concious not to fall into elitism within the genre she's chosen
main issue here is how sterile it feels though, could just do more, though this isn't for me in general i don't think
This album is the equivalent of eating expensive food at a 3 star restaurant. Yeah it *sounds* good, but there's a distinct lack of true beauty here, so much of it feels like it's trying to hard to reach blindly for what it *thinks* it should sound like, rather than either having laser focus on this idea to bring out this sound in a truly masterful way, or bringing something unique to the table within the realms of the genre.
The structure, instrumentation, composition, theming, recording, mixing, mastering, and performances are static throughout this entire project. There’s Weak songwriting, homogenous production, and limited vocal range start to finish. It simply achieve nothing aside from recreating sounds and emotions that have been done better decades ago, hiding under the veneer of class and nostalgia to trick its young, impressionable audience into thinking it’s far more sophisticated and unique than it really is.
Thought I might weigh in on the discourse surrounding this album. So like I do think the whole “savior of jazz” thing some critics and media outlets have been presenting her as is pretty stupid, especially considering jazz was never dead or whatever, but I feel like as a kinda jazzy trad pop album, this is very good at what it’s trying to do. I’m not the hugest on trad pop in general and I was a bit disappointed when this wasn’t as jazzy as like Lamp or some other shit considered jazz pop, but I feel like this whole drama and shit has led to some people not liking the album for not fulfilling false expectations set by stupid critics and shit
laufey really did so much for pop, jazz, and bossa nova. this is totally not just nothing music that does nothing interesting for the genres shes influenced by. what a boring release. literally bare minimum music
