CRITIC REVIEWS

100
Rolling Stone

On 'Guts' she avoids all the second-album pitfalls with her most ambitious, intimate, and messy songs yet.

100
NME

The 20-year-old's self-assured second album documents her hopes, fears and trauma with thrilling emotional candour.

100
The Independent
Post-Disney, Rodrigo arrives kicking and screaming into reality.
100
Dork
There was an irreplicable magic on ‘SOUR’, so Olivia doesn’t bother trying to recreate it. ‘GUTS’ is a different beast – an ode to the angsty, aching final days of being a teenager and girlhood, it’s a formidable second album that leaves Olivia Rodrigo ready to face whatever is thrown her way next.
90
PopMatters

Olivia Rodrigo sings of fame, pain, heartbreak, and growing up on Guts. There’s rage, yearning, and reckless behavior here that transcends generations.

90
The Forty-Five

She sings of infatuation and creates spiky anthems about the crippling embarrassment of just being alive.

90
AllMusic

GUTS is emphatic proof that Rodrigo isn't just good for a kid -- she's grown into an artist with plenty of things to say, and the confidence and eloquence to say them her way.

90
DIY
The opposite sex is still firmly caught in her crosshairs, but there’s a tongue wedged firmly in cheek.
82
Spectrum Culture

Building on many of the tropes and themes established on her debut, Guts shows just how snarky, smart and self-aware Olivia Rodrigo and her songwriting are.

82
Paste

Beneath the cannonball of her voice and the album's thunderous rock arrangements, there is a soft fragility waiting to be absorbed.

80
Clash

Olivia Rodrigo has created another fun, varied and mature studio album, which perfectly contributes to her wider attempt to preserve her experiences as a teenager within her music.

80
The Arts Desk
Like Lavigne before her, Rodrigo has mastered the millennial angst of an era.
80
musicOMH
An immensely confident and assured record which confirms that its creator is here for the long-term.
80
The Sydney Morning Herald

With Guts, Rodrigo has conquered the dreaded difficult second album: it’s an assured collection of whip-smart songs that trace the contours of early adulthood with both compassion, wisdom and a healthy dose of venom.

80
The Observer
Pretty tunes are laced with pain as Rodrigo grapples with identity, betrayal and overnight superstardom on her fascinating second album.

Sputnikmusic

SOUR part two, but the results this time are even sweeter.

80
Evening Standard
It’s an impossible double win to achieve, managing to sound entirely chilled about following up an album that spent an entire year in the US and UK top 10s, while also firing out deft, clever song after song that will surely pin her to pop’s A-list for good.
80
Pitchfork
The pop star rocks out on her biting, charismatic second album, turning the ritual humiliations of girlhood into dazzling, over-the-top spectacles.
80
The Irish Times
If you thought Sour was a royal flush, then this album is the winning goal in a penalty shoot-out.
80
The Guardian
Her debut made her a pop superstar and gen Z icon, and the tougher-sounding followup remains full of sharp portraiture and withering put-downs.
80
The Line of Best Fit

Rodrigo has bigger aspirations than just being big. GUTS doesn’t sound like anything any major pop star has released in decades – or ever, to an extent. And that’s a good thing.

76
Beats Per Minute

GUTS is the kind of work a generation of young people needs, and I’m sure many will look back at having their youth soundtracked by such a talent as a privilege.

70
Slant Magazine
The songs vacillate between knowing and puerile, mostly playing Rodrigo’s youth to its advantage but sometimes overplaying it.
60
The Telegraph

The Drivers License singer’s second album is a precision-made slice of Gen Z melancholia – but her lyrics sometimes stick in the throat.

GUTS improves on SOUR overall, with way more diversity in songs and subjects. It may have fewer massive highlights, but it is the more consistent and mature listen of the two. A really strong showing from Olivia.

"They all say that it gets better, but what if I don't?"

Anxieties, beauty standards, abusive relationships, social norms and pimples be damned, Olivia Rodrigo has just proved that she is actually the new sheriff in town. Yup, she did it. I had my doubts, plenty of them actually, but Olivia just showed me and many others how genuine, honest and talented she really is.

Admittedly, I wasn't the biggest fan of SOUR. I thought it was quite underwhelming and undercooked for the most ... read more

summary: i've been anticipating olivia's sophomore album so much and after giving it multiple listens, i'm finally reviewing it, woop woop 🤗 that being said, i'm glad i have given it a few listens because my opinion on a lot of the songs have changed compared to how i initially felt about them. this album feels more diverse than her debut which was really nice to see. her songwriting is good and her vocals are really pleasant. this album has strong early 2000s vibes (a lot of the songs ... read more

Love this album, definitely one of my favourites this year. A nice mix of pop punk tunes and piano ballads.

Fav Tracks: all-american bitch, bad idea right?, vampire, lacy, ballad of a homeschooled girl, get him back!, love is embarrassing, pretty isn't pretty, teenage dream

Least Fav Track: logical

This album improves a lot on what SOUR did well. O-Rod has a great angsty, pop-punky style that isn't anything unique but is definitely appealing. Enjoyed this one a lot.
Favorite song - all-american bitch
